Norman VAN NEST Obituary

NORMAN GARY VAN NEST Norman Gary Van Nest passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the age of 86. Loving partner of Charlotte, father of Alison, Richard (Jan), and Taylor (Mac), grandfather of Braden, Daniel, David, Dante, William, Cavelle and August, great-grandfather of Owen and Madeleine, brother of Darcy (Jane) and Uncle of Heather, Cristina and Jennifer. Gary touched many hearts and will be sorely missed by all fortunate enough to have known him. Born in Windsor, Ontario, July 22, 1936, Gary grew up with a love for sports - none greater than baseball. He was Southwest Ontario's top batter and was professionally drafted before ultimately deciding he'd rather pursue higher education. Gary graduated from Assumption University and went on to be a pioneer in finance. As a venture capitalist he supported, developed and transformed a wide and colourful array of companies, and was still actively engaged in a number of them at the time of his death. He was no less colourful in his personal life - as a world adventurer, one-time Olympic bobsledder, and philanthropist he was deeply spiritual as well as musical, extremely sociable, had a wonderful sense of humour and lived his life on his own terms. To know him was to love him. In lieu of flowers Gary would love for donations to be made to the Jays Care Foundation or the Good Shepherd Ministries in his honor.

I was fortunate to share the second half of your journey. From our first trip to Vancouver to visit Jimmy Pattison to our chat last week it was a indeed an adventure. Hopefully your book will reveal it all. May angels sing you to your rest!
