Olga ROMAN Obituary

R.N., B.N., M.Sc., Ph.D 1928 – 2024 Olga died peacefully, with grace and dignity on September the 4th. She was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, the daughter of Nicholas and Jenny Roman. She was one of three siblings alongside her brothers, William and Ted Roman, all predeceased. She was a proud aunt to four nieces, two nephews (one predeceased), and is survived by their respective families. She was the most outstanding aunt to three generations, and they were her pride and joy. She relished each occasion, celebration, and achievement of every member of the family, and they enriched her life. Above all, Olga was a dedicated nurse, and nursing became her life's work. She was a pioneer in the development of public health and community care policy, and an activist for social justice in community health. Her dedication, caring, compassion, and sharp focus on issues in health care led her to work in England, Canada, Pakistan, Australia, Uganda, Ukraine and the United States of America. Across continents she developed nursing education and community health services. Having taught at Queens University & The University of Calgary, Olga accepted an invitation from Dean Dr. Dorothy Kergin in 1974 to come to McMaster University, School of Nursing. She became the project director of the McMaster-Aga Khan-CIDA Project, and led a team of colleagues who implemented their plan for nursing education and community care. Dundas was home, where Olga enjoyed the theatre, arts, festivals and dining. She is to be remembered as a kind and generous neighbour, a sharp and clear communicator, and a most supportive colleague. Her friends became her family and they truly cared for her. Nothing gave her more joy than the Niagara fruit season, which prompted Olga's strawberry jam, made with love and given as gifts to all. With thanks to Dr. M Levy and Dr. A Emili for continuity of her care. Thanks to St. Joseph's Hospital Hamilton and Bayshore Healthcare for excellent service and exceptional nursing care. She will be remembered in prayers at St. Paul's Westdale Anglican Church. Olga will be laid to rest in the Roman family plot in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

In the late fall of 2023, I sat across the table from Olga at a Circle of Friends who had cared for our friend, Mary Buzzell. Olga was one of these dear friends, and I recall her saying that at her last visit with Mary, she looked deeply into Mary´s beautiful blue eyes and shared memories. I can imagine these two ladies, now in the spirit world, making plans for those of us still on earth to move their agendas forward on social justice, community health and elder care. These phenomenal nurses, friends before I met either of them, have been foundational in my life. I treasure the time spent with them.

OLga was a schoolmate and lifetime friend. In 1954-5 Olga,Enid Pagnini and I followed our dream. We purchased an old English cab in London and took off through Europe. The cab was our home. In Rome. thieves broke in and stole almost, everything,,,but we kept going. We wrote marvellous diaries and shared them through the years. Olga was a humble and generous friend. I will miss her. May she rest in God's arms.

Olga has been a presence in our lives for decades. As a life long friend of Enid Pagnini (our aunt and great aunt), Olga was always in our lives. The enclosed picture is of Moira, Olga, and Enid in Italy as they traveled Europe on a shoestring budget in the 1950's. We were regaled with stories of that trip, the typing Olga's PhD thesis, and Olga's pictures of traveling Pakistan. Olga was a wise and elegant person in our lives. We will miss her. Our thoughts are with all who loved her.

Olga's Family and Friends
My sincere sympathy to Olga's nieces and nephews in the loss of a dear aunt. Some of my memories go back to my growing up years as the next door neighbour to Nick and Jenny and the 3 children. I am 87 years old at present so there were many happy and sad times my family shared with the Romans.--Bill and Olga's Wedding, playing catch with Ted when I was a grade niner and he in grade 13, and always glad to see Olga when she came home to visit her parents. The passing of Jenny and Nick and years later the taking down of Nick's Boarding House left a large hole in Lebel Ave. However I never cease to remember the Roman Family members every time I pass where they lived and my birth house next door which is still standing and occupied. The last time I chatted with Olga was shortly before the end came to the Roman Building. The beautiful Obituary filled in many details of Olga's great career that I was not aware of. Many thanks.
I still live in Kirkland Lake so my Lebel Ave recollections will continue.

May Olga now Rest in Peace with the rest of her family.

Olga was a great friend of the Rogers Family, having many shared memories of growing up in Kirkland Lake with Nancy Jane Chisholm Rogers which she also shared with Bob, Colin, Sean and Sheila Rogers over the years. She is missed but the memories continue to sustain us.
