I am just learning this evening of Pat's death. Such a brilliant woman, a former Loretto Abbey classmate and a good friend. My sympathy and love to her family whom she loved dearly. Thank you, Pat, for using your gifts so wisely and well, and for the great contributions you made to Canadian culture. Thank you for all you have shared, and may you rest in peace. Countless conversations and discussions about writers and writing; conferences we travelled to and attended together; meals we shared and phone visits we arranged when life was too busy to meet up in person - a half century of memories! I first met Pat in 1975 and we stayed in touch throughout the five decades that followed. Today, January 11, 2025, as family and friends honour her passing in person, I join from away in spirit, my heart full of sadness and souvenirs ...

Patricia Smart was my favourite professor who, over the course of the last thirty years, became a dear friend. She was instrumental in facilitating every step of my career, and I owe her an enormous debt of gratitude. I am remembering her now: at the helm of a class full of students, in her living room surrounded by books, en tête-à-tête across restaurants in Montréal and Oxford, her face illuminated by ideas. Sending my deepest condolences to Michael and Mary Ann, of whom she was so very proud.

My sincere condolences to Michaet and Mary Ann and her family on the passing of their mother and grandmother. I first met Pat at Queens in the mid-sixties when she and her husband John were instrumental in the founding of the Waffle Movement in the NDP. That she could raise a family, be a social activist, and continue her scholarly studies was a remarkable achievement. When the Smarts moved to Ottawa she continued her scholarly studies as a prfessor at Carleton University. She was a brilliant scholar of French-Canadian culture and feminism. Her legscy is and will be the scholarly books and articles that she wrote. She will be missed.

Patricia Smart was one of the most influential profs I met in university. I took first and second year courses, I now realize, shortly after she started teaching at Carleton. Not only did she introduce me to Quebecois and French Canadian literature and culture, she encouraged me to stick with my studies at a time when I was feeling disillusioned. I have always remembered her. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.
