Patricia REYNOLDS Obituary

PATRICIA ANNE REYNOLDS (née Dugit) November 9, 1934 - March 16, 2022 Pat passed away peacefully on March 16, 2022, at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Eric Reynolds. She leaves behind three children, Catherine (David), Gordon (Julie) and Susan (Paul); six grandchildren, Jeffrey Reynolds, Brian Reynolds, Alia Kirkpatrick, Sam Graham, Patrick Rogers, and Zachary Rogers; and two great-grandchildren, Rae and Otis Reynolds. Pat was born and raised in the Kingsway area of Toronto, with her older sister Marj playing an active role in her early upbringing. She was a proud graduate of the Commerce program at the University of Toronto, one of only two women in the class of 1956. Pat spent a wonderful year in England with her dear friends Zoe Heal and Marg Ann Markwick after graduation and remained close with them through the rest of her life. Pat became a Chartered Accountant and married Eric Reynolds in 1961. She loved reading, theatre, and travel, and she enjoyed discussing these and other topics with her many friends. Pat especially loved Jane Austen and was an enthusiastic member of JASNA, faithfully attending their annual conferences in cities across Canada and the US. Pat also was a founding member of a play-reading group and maintained meticulous records of each play read for over 40 years. Pat and Eric took an unconventional approach to retirement and lived in Japan for two years, teaching English and traveling across Southeast Asia. Returning to Toronto meant a return to treasured friends and more routine activities, though they continued to travel regularly for many years. Pat and Eric were longtime members of St. Andrew's Church in Toronto, where Pat served many roles over the years, including newsletter editor and treasurer of the St Andrew's Heritage Trust. She will be remembered for her kindness and her sense of humour, and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the staff of The Briton House for their care for Pat over the years she lived there. A memorial will be held at St. Andrew's Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the St. Andrew's Church Out of the Cold Programme.

Pat was my first serious girlfriend. We met at a C.A,firm, where
we both were students, and my Dad was senior partner - so we agreed
to keep our relationship office-ially secret. It lasted 2 and 1/2 years.

Her boast was to be 1 of only 2 girl grads of Uof T Comm. & Finance,
mine was to have stood 1:1 graduating from U.of T. Classics, and then
on a scholarshp earning Harvard's A.M. master's degree a year later.

Jane Austen is a delight to read for her artistry, but her typical
heroine tended to be a sharp-tongued, snobbish, social-climbing
proto-suffragette obsessed with feminine trivia, manners and manors,
about whom Virginia Woolf, though a fervent admirer of Jane Austen,
said, "I'd rather not find myself alone in a room with her. Therefore, it
surprised me to hear of Pat's lifelong interest in Jane Austen, since she
was nothing like that when I knew her.

I was also surprised to live to my present age of 89.2, though inclined
to think it could be due, after the birth of a son and a daughter, and 21
years married, to a divorce and the ensuing 21 years of peace and quiet.

Anyway, Pat was a joy to me while I knew her and I'm sure I'll continue
to think of her often for the rest of my life.

My condolences to the family on Pat's death. We worked together about ten years at the law firm. We kept in touch after our departures whether by the occasional lunch or by Christmas card. We had good chats. I especially enjoyed seeing her at Dancing in the Park.

I wish to express my condolences to the family. As a fellow board member of the St. Andrew's Heritage Trust I always appreciated her insight, preparation and wit. However, I will remember her kind interactions with my young daughters more as I was occasionally able to give her a ride home from Church. Once again, my condolences for your loss.

In loving memory of Pat, a great and loyal friend for over 55 years. Beginning as next door neighbours, she and Eric and their family became part of ours. Once Pat claimed you as a friend she had the knack of never letting you drift away. We will always remember her kindness and her insatiable curiosity about life.
