PATRICK LAVERTY Obituary

April 24, 2025 Patrick Timothy Laverty was a joyful man of deep compassion. Born in Montreal in 1944, to parents Betty and Arthur, he attended primary and secondary schools in Quebec, earning the B. Comm, Honours Economics, from Loyola College in 1961. Showing early promise, he was awarded the Economics Prize, Loyola, and the Lieutenant Governor's Bronze Medal. At the age of 16, he knew he wanted to be an economist. And he excelled in his chosen métier, as evidenced by the accolades he won, beginning at Loyola College with the Economics Award, then on to Queen's University where he studied with prominent economists of the day. He entered Queen's master's program in 1965 at the same time as he entered full-time work with the federal Ministry of Finance. Over successive years, he worked as an economist and as a lecturer, first at Acadia University and then at Queen's. In 1969, he graduated with the Ph.D. from Queen's University, receiving the Skelton-Clark Award. Over the next three decades, he plied his career with the public service of Ontario, where he mastered every substantive policy field in which he found himself. He was the quintessential public servant, becoming the policy advisor of choice for briefings on intractable issues. It was at Ontario where he met Gail, his partner of the next forty-one years, and her two sons, William and Alex. They enjoyed travel together, first in Ontario in the early years on canoeing trips, then further afield to the cultural centres of Europe. Each year they would attempt to learn a bit of the language and cuisine, convincing themselves that the locals appreciated it. His taste for travel extended to the rustic. As a teenager, he excelled in wilderness canoeing and woodcraft skills. He was the right partner to have in a storm. And so it was with life. He loved – and was loved by - his extended family and was generous with his time and attention for any who sought his counsel. Continuing the tradition of his parents, he supported several charitable concerns. Patrick Timothy Laverty was a gentle and gracious man who deepened and enriched the lives of all whom he touched.
