PATRICK STEWART SHAW obituary

PATRICK SHAW Obituary

(Baangii Nbiish eBiigisiing) (October 24, 1963 – January 12, 2026) Pat loved everyone he met, and they loved him back. He died suddenly of unexpected heart complications in Ushuaia, Argentina, a place he treasured since 1991. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Leea Litzgus (Ogimaa Bineshiikwe); his daughter, Simone (Waabishki Memengoons); and his son, Harris (Zhaawshko Giizhik). Pat was loved dearly by his mother, Robina "Bobbi;" his late father, Michael; his sisters, Yasmina-Hilary and Alexa-Frances; and his brother, Ian. He was deeply cherished by his niece, Nicole; his nephews, Cree, Devon, and Joshua; his uncle, Philip; his aunt, Sally; and his in-laws, April, Jason, Brian, Melanie, and Phil. Respected Anishinaabe grandmother Lilian Pitawanikwat bestowed upon Pat the spirit name Baangii Nbiish eBiigisiing, which means "a droplet of water that causes an impactful ripple." Pat packed a lot of life into a short time, and his impactful ripple left the world a better place. Born in Montreal and raised in Toronto, Canada, Pat came into the world as a hazel-eyed, gentle, and happy soul, curious to meet every stranger who crossed his path. He inspired many with his compassion, generosity, and zest for life. Pat took great pleasure in hosting parties, especially Christmas dinner, quietly making the rounds to ensure everyone felt included. He was seen as a great connector and the glue that kept communities together. Pat's dedication to team building led his employees to follow him wherever he went. Family was his passion, and many called him a brother. His spirit of exploration began as a boy. He packed a knapsack with cookies, a knife, matches, and a rolled-up towel to hike the Toronto ravines or set up camp along the Saugeen River. Thereafter, he never turned down an opportunity for adventure. He led the first Canadian expedition to the Antarctic with many notable guests, including former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. He was a leading helmsman in the classic offshore sailing race, the Fastnet, and traveled four continents by motorcycle with his buddies. From a young age, he spent his summers sailing at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and managing the Ojibway Club in Pointe au Baril, where he met his wife Leea. Pat enjoyed winter weekends skiing at Georgian Peaks. Much of his life was spent traveling around the world, but his favourite destination was Antarctica, and the port he departed from, Ushuaia. Pat earned his undergraduate degree in Economics and International Relations from the University of Toronto, his M.A. in International History from the London School of Economics, and his MBA from Ivey Business School. At age 24, Pat supervised the construction of, and then managed, the Université Canadienne en France in Villefranche-sur-Mer, where he lived for five years. His love of Canada led him to be the national coordinator for "My Canada Includes Quebec." He was the vice president of Marine Expeditions, where he spearheaded environmentally responsible travel in Antarctica, and organized the collection of 50 years' worth of garbage. As the president and CEO of Quark Expeditions, he grew the company to be the largest in polar travel. He served as CEO of Blyth Academy Schools, enrolling 10,000 students annually. Most recently, he became the CEO of Polar Latitudes Expeditions. Pat's impactful ripple reached many corners of the globe and many people's hearts. The greatest gift he gave was an example of how to be kind to one another and to value all who cross our paths. His family would like to thank; the people of Ushuaia for honouring his life with celebrations and salutes, and his colleagues and employees for their outpouring of love and support - particularly Erich, Mariela, and Dr. Larson of Polar Latitudes for their efforts. The devotion of Pat's "brothers from other mothers" - Dimas, Mike, Veljko, Andy, Dr. Mike, et al. - has been a tremendous comfort, as has been Emilio, who held Pat's hand at the end. His children want everyone to know how proud they are to have had such an inspirational father. All of his family will miss him dearly. Pat leaves a big hole in the lives of so many. Patrick rest in peace - you were an exceptional human being and a warm part of my childhood. Kind thoughtful and always living the best life . I just saw the news of your passing on Facebook from mexico and i am shattered - you were taken too soon but you lived more in 62 years than most do in 100 . See you in heaven bud.

There aren't words to express how sad I feel for Patrick's family and frankly, all of us who knew him because to know him was to love him. Patrick was always smiling and I absolutely loved seeing him pull into the marina. He and Winston would go down the dock to bring the boat around. He was always just so happy and content. Patrick really did love life and it showed. I am forever grateful I had the pleasure of knowing him. You will be missed!

Patrick was such a kind person. The breadth of his accomplishments both professionally and personally say everything about who he was and what he held dear. Thinking about everyone who loves Patrick.

Pat was a deeply loved member of a tight group of high school friends. I had a big innocent crush on him in grade 7. He was an absolute gem of a man. Last time I saw him was at Grossman´s, with some of the old crew. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

When I heard of Pat´s passing it was a real shock. A really nice man gone way too soon. A few years ago Pat purchased our family cottage in Pointe Au Baril. He knew the sale was very hard for us and he was always sensitive to our feelings and memories, even inviting us over to see what upgrades he had done to the cottage.
My condolences to Pat´s family. We all have lost an amazing man.

Condolences from the Fenns.

Pat was a few years younger than I, so I never really got to know him until we briefly met at the Edgewood Crescent reunion a couple of summers ago. We tried to get together once or twice since then, but it never worked out. I´m glad he´s getting such a beautiful sendoff from so many people who loved him. -Paul

I first met Pat during a TUI conference under what can only be described as "classic Pat" circumstances. He was "deep in the trenches", navigating the stress of the Kapital Khlebnikov being stuck in the ice. Yet, in the middle of that crisis, he showed the grace that defined him. He took out time for a glass of wine and gave me my first "download" of the legendary Quark Expeditions stories.

In 2010, I had the honor of succeeding him at Quark-a role I took on with pride, knowing the size of the shoes I had to fill.

Over the years, our paths continued to cross. This past year, we spoke regularly as he worked through the complexities of integrating Albatros Expeditions. Our conversations often moved away from ships and logistics toward the personal side of our industry. We would "complain" together about the amount of travel, the exhaustion of the road, and the precious time missed with our families. Those moments of shared vulnerability and mutual understanding are what I will miss the most.

Our last call was in early December. We talked as we always did, and I had no way of knowing it would be our final conversation.

Pat, you were a great guy, and a true example for all of us in the expedition world. You will be deeply missed.

I first met Pat while working for the Ojib. Di Schatz was the president and she was having a pre season staff event at her home. Pat was the new sailing instructor. He fit in immediately!

He was a great addition to the Ojibway club and a great team player. I was manager a year or two before him.

Although I had seen him other than to wave from the dock in the last few years I was delighted when he was able to buy the Horler´s cottage and turn it into his own! I know he´d wanted to buy a cottage for a long time.

My condolences to you Leea and your family. It turns out we are connected through David Graham- his mom Karen is one of my oldest and best friends. Again my heart is with you.

I was an elementary school friend of Pat´s. We sat across from one another and I recall him like it was yesterday that we were grade 7!

I am Nancy Stevens, Lincoln Stevens´s sister. I have the pleasure of knowing Dimas and Emilio.

I remember Francis from those days too.

I wish I had know Pat into adulthood. He was an amazing human who did amazing things for people and with people - he sure made a significant ripple.

The loss of Pat is surreal and monumental -taken way too soon from this planet.

May your family cherish the memories and impact he made on the world. My memory of him as a friend in my formative years was a person of integrity, kindness, and compassion. Clearly he embodied these traits for his lifetime.
