PAUL BUCHANAN Obituary

With sadness, we announce the passing of Paul Andrew Buchanan on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Paul leaves his beloved children, Stewart and Meredith; his wife of 29 years, Martha Cumming; his sister, Margaret (Jim); his brother, John; and his nephew, Christopher Hannay. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Ian and Jean (Ferris) Buchanan.

Paul grew up in London, Ontario, in a home full of music, and became a gifted cellist and singer. He shared his rich bass-baritone voice freely performing in opera, musical theatre, and church choirs, including with the Canadian Opera Company chorus, in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and Etobicoke Musical Productions, where he met Martha. Paul's love for musical theatre lives on in Meredith, who carries his legacy with her own passion for the stage.

Paul had an entrepreneurial spirit and enjoyed his time as a corporate trainer in the financial services industry before creating Legacy Learning Academy. Paul had a deep appreciation for food, having studied Hospitality and Food Administration at the University of Guelph, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in 1985. He was a master in the kitchen - his spicy chili was legendary, and his homemade burgers, though painstakingly prepared, were always worth the wait. He was also incredibly handy. He could build a deck, re-shingle a roof, and tackle any repair job with skill and confidence.

Paul was a sharp dresser with an impeccable collection of suits and ties, and he ironed his shirts to perfection. He was an enthusiastic photographer, often waking before dawn to capture the perfect sunrise when travelling. A lover of trivia, history and politics, Paul brought energy and insight to any gathering, sparking lively discussions with friends, neighbours and strangers alike. His spontaneous and generous spirit meant that he would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

Paul was immensely proud of Stewart and Meredith and loved them with all his heart. He was a devoted son and grandson and felt a deep connection to the family farm in Tiverton, where he enjoyed a strong sense of belonging with his family, community and the land.

The family is grateful to Paul's friends who listened to and supported him, especially during the last several months. A Celebration of Life will be held at Kingsway Baptist Church, 41 Birchview Blvd., Etobicoke, on Saturday, April 12th, at 11:00 a.m. In memory of Paul, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a Charity of Your Choice would be appreciated. I had the pleasure to meet Paul through the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He was a fantastic singer and a real doll. I remember when he came on stage with Etobicoke Musical Productions and began to sing. The whole audience shook, he was so good. I will never forget that. Unfortunately, I am out of the country and will not be able to attend the service, but I wish I could. My deepest sympathies to his dear ones.

Paul was a wonderful friend. We worked together at ScotiaMcLeod back when we were both new to the investment world. The last time I saw him he was excited about his newest business venture. He will be missed.
