Paul HAINES Obituary
HAINES, Paul E.
Passed away suddenly on January 21, 2003 at his home, Easterly, in Ennismore. He was 70. Beloved husband of Jo Hayward, loving father to son Timothy, his two daughters, Avery and Emily, and their spouses Steven and James. Adoring 'Papa' to grandchildren Riley and Eva. Fond brother of Fredericka Sue Jorgensen and uncle to her children, Tom, Paul and Jill. Also survived by relatives Van Wormer and Haines in Vassar, Michigan, his hometown. Paul taught French in New York City, New Mexico, New Delhi and Fenelon Falls, and loved to travel. His passion for music, especially improvisational jazz, endeared him to musicians and listeners worldwide with whom he collaborated throughout his life. Countless artists have composed music to accompany his poems. He wrote about music over the years as well
most recently he wrote articles for Coda magazine covering prominent jazz festivals in Istanbul and Sienna. He also made several experimental sound videos, shown internationally and in Canada at the Guelph Jazz Festival. Everyone who knew him is grieving the loss of so vibrant and generous a spirit. He tirelessly prepared collage 'K7' tapes of the diverse musics that thrilled him, and sent them out daily to his many friends around the world. These, along with his poems, are the treasures he has left us. A memorial concert celebrating Paul's life will take place in New York City in the spring. Donations to Doctors Without Borders may be made in Paul's name in keeping with his lifelong opposition to war.
