Paul HERTZ Obituary

PAUL HERTZ We are sad to announce the news that Paul Hertz passed away on October 16, 2019. You may know Paul from his time at Lister's Riding Farm in Halton Hills, ON, The Japanese Paper Place in Toronto, ON or Ferraro Foods in Rossland, BC. Or maybe you've met him at an art gallery, riding horses, bird watching, hiking, skiing, playing tennis or pickleball. You may have met him in Rossland, Toronto or Tucson. You may have seen his artistry and technical skill in his quilts, printmaking, and bookbinding. He enjoyed food: the planning, the prep, cooking, baking and, of course, eating and drinking with friends and family. Especially at Wood Lake with the Porter and Lockington families. We will remember Paul for his kind words and thoughtful deeds, his sense of humour, athleticism, determination, creativity and his love of nature. His interest in others was always genuine and authentic. When talking with people who were visiting Rossland he would often find some connection among friends and family in Ontario. He called these his Small World stories. He had many. Paul was predeceased by members of the Hertz, Bell and Ritzie families in and around Toronto, Milton, and Barry's Bay in Ontario. He is survived by his husband, Robert Boyd (Rossland, BC); his siblings, Jeff Hertz (Welland, ON), Dawn Hertz (Rossland, BC), Joe Hertz (Alex Brooks-Hill, Whistler, BC); and numerous nieces, nephews and God-children. He will be missed by many, especially by members of the Hertz, Bell and Boyd families. We hope to gather in Rossland and in Toronto to celebrate his life and to grieve his loss at some time in the next few months. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Paul's name may be made to a charity of your choice. Paul was curious and interested in learning new stuff. Recently he was intrigued with the history of the song Row, Row, Row Your Boat. We will think of him when we hear/sing it.

Hello Friends and Family of Paul. We want to share our love and respect for our dear friend. We have so many stories and rembrances of Paul but a couple stand out. Paul, as you all know, was very organized and focused. He was always making lists of conversation topics that he would bring to visits with his friends. We would be having dinner, or coffee and he would pull his list out, formed into an agenda and point by point we would have an in depth and well rounded conversation. Through those lists he showed how much thought he had put into the visit, how the time spent with friends were more than momentary occurances, how he stayed connected when apart. This wonderful and unique aspect of him rubbed off on us and we created and would bring our lists to the table as well. The visit couldn't end until we each had gone though the lists.

Hello friends and family of Paul. We want to share our love and respect for our dear friend. We have so many stories and remembrances of Paul but a couple stand out. Paul, as you may know, was very organized and focused. He was always making lists of conversation topics that he would bring to visits with his friends. We would be having dinner or coffee and he would pull his list out, formed into an agenda or page of sticky notes, and point by point we would have an in depth and well rounded conversation. Through those lists he showed how much thought he had put into the visit, how the time spent with friends was more than momentary occurrences, and how he stayed connected when apart. This wonderful and unique aspect of him rubbed off on us and we created and would bring our lists to the table as well. The visit couldn't end until we each had gone through the lists.

The other significant story we want to share about Paul happened during this past June. Paul was experiencing trouble sleeping and would be awake in the early hours of the morning. We are also often awake at that time and started exchanging early morning emails, sharing our thoughts. Paul observed that he wanted to acquire more descriptive words for that time of day as there seemed to be many more words for the other end of daylight. So we started sharing our words to express what we saw and felt in the early morning light. That emerged into using Haiku poetry, which involves three lines. The first line is five syllables, the second line has seven and the third line is back to five syllables. It was a beautiful time of connection and inspiration. We are sure that Paul wouldn't mind if we shared one of his haikus:
The early dawn light
a soft whisper in my ear
at the end is dusk

We will leave you with a haiku that we have created for Paul:
Paul we send you off
we'll join you another day
get your lists ready

With love and full hearts,
Laura and David
