PAUL DOUGLAS KILBURN February 7, 1936 - August 20, 2020 Paul D. Kilburn, MUS. BAC., ARCT, RMT, professional musician, composer, pianist, organist, teacher, performer, passed away peacefully in Scarborough on August 20, 2020 in his 84th year with his loving wife Francie Norma Service after a courageous battle with cancer. During his final months, Paul received support and comfort from his children from his first marriage, Stephen, Tom, Bill and Susan, and through regular contact with his brother Michael. Paul was predeceased by his brothers Nicholas and John. Paul is also lovingly remembered by close family members, along with his many friends and students. Paul was a kind, elegant, gentle, charming gentleman with a joy of living, a love of laughter, and a gorgeous smile which lit up the world. He was a virtuoso pianist with exquisite musicianship who had a fascinating and distinguished career. Paul often said: It has been a great life full of glorious music, enduring friendships, an abiding appreciation of butterflies, and appreciation of close family.

Paul was my piano mentor in Scarborough when I was 13 back in 1979. I still have my piano note book he wrote in and cherish his notes. We played the first and third movements of George Gershwin’s Concerto in F at the Royal Conservatory. My mom always gave him tea and a plate full of cookies. He consumed them methodically as I worked thru my Hanon exercises. I still remember the racy limericks he taught me. :-) Rest In Peace, Paul and thank you for the memories.

It was a great pleasure to get to know Paul through the Toronto Home Music Club. And to have him play several times in our home. He was a warm, friendly person and a fine musician.

Music has connected me and my fellows in the Bedford Trio with Paul and Francie. Their warmth, kindness, and humour is so infectious, and we enjoyed listening to Paul's stories whenever we go to chat after concerts. Sending our deepest condolences and love to Francie and family. Hope Paul continue to enjoy great music up there!

Paul's expressive, musical, powerful, dignified playing at Home Music Club gatherings will forever remain in my memory. The HMC won't be the same without him. As well, I will always be grateful to Paul and Francie for being faithful friends at times when their constancy was so appreciated. My sincere condolences to Francie and to Paul's family.

It was with great sadness and sorrow I received the news of Paul's passing. My heartfelt Condolences to Francie.
I will miss seeing his smiling, cheerful face at the Archives. At the same time, I will always cherish the memories of both of you visiting the Archives. I am glad that we were able to catch up and have a small conversation when time permitted.
I will miss his presence at the Archives. I am sure Paul would love you to continue the work at the Archives that gave both of you so much joy.

I was privileged to study piano with Paul many years ago, and then to reconnect through Francie many years later. He was as described in this lovely tribute to him - kind, elegant, full of life, with a heart-warming smile. My sincere condolences to Francie and your family.

This is a great picture of Paul, expressing his humour and joy in life. A violinist, I played with Paul for many years and have terrific memories of shared music making (especially Bach sonatas) and laughter. Paul and Francie were regulars at our 14 years of winter solstice events. I will miss Paul and offer most sincere cndolances to Francie, Michael and the rest of the family.
