Paul MARTEL Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul Martel, who died on April 3rd, 2020. A renowned architect and pillar within the Toronto Annex neighbourhood, Paul was known for his advocacy for community green space and architectural preservation. Cherished husband to the late Joan Willsher-Martel, and beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother.

A dedicated community leader, Paul is fondly remembered for his design of and concept behind Ecology Park, renamed Paul Martel Park in 2014. His architectural work can be found throughout the city and province, but his warmth could be felt far beyond. Paul was kind-hearted, caring, committed to his family and his community, and will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date.

Worked for Paul @ 27 Madison c.1977...79 with a Georgetown patron keeping our lights on. The good old days saving Mad-Huron from blockbuster 26 storey plans.double take it to the 35ft. height by-law. All P.M. issues to be sure. Thanks for this.

Paul designed our beautiful cottage on Stony Lake. From the beginning, he was professional and very kind and understanding. He was always sincerely interested in our views. His trade mark chuckles were infectious. When I called Paul at 1 in the morning to say that I found that the roof planes did not meet, Paul answered that every great work of art has a flaw. I was relieved. Over the years we met regularly, visited Paul and Joan in the Annex and he visited us at the cottage with his daughter and grandchildren. Paul was, without doubt, one of the most gentle and talented people of all my acquaintances. All who have known him will miss him.

What a wonderful visionary, architect and horticulturalist who made significant contributions to the development of Toronto.

Paul was a wonderful inspiration for those interested in art, architecture and horticulture. I was one of the first tenants at the Huron-Madison project which he lovely designed in the early 1980's and established a garden which later to become Ecology House, another of his gifts to the City.

My condolences to you, Anne and your girls. I have lots of lovely memories of spending time with you and your parents, and my favourite memory of your dad is the one week I stayed at your cottage. Every day of the week your dad came up with a different theme: backwards day (we had crepes for dinner), Monks' meals where we couldn't talk (hmmm...perhaps we'd been chatting too much?!), I think there was a dress up day as well. Paul was imaginative and kind, and a talented architect. My father and brothers send their condolences as well.
