Paul MOSCA Obituary

PAUL G. MOSCA Paul Mosca died suddenly on May 9, 2022. Paul was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Despite his heartbreak when the Dodgers left for California, Paul remained an enthusiastic baseball fan and thoroughly enjoyed coaching his 3 sons' Little League teams. Paul was introduced to Phoenician archaeology and epigraphy in graduate school. His work on the ancient city of Carthage led to decades of study and travel around the Mediterranean and beyond. During 40 years of teaching at UBC, Paul became a mentor and friend to many of his students. Paul loved the Commercial Drive area, his dogs, his pipes, his books and wine making with his neighbours. Paul's kindness and wicked sense of humour are greatly missed by his wife, Eileen; his sons, Matthew, Peter and John, his daughters-in-law, Ying and Tasha; his grandchildren, Petunia and William; and his brother, Bill. Paul was past president of L'Arche Greater Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations to that wonderful organization would be appreciated. Special thanks to the nurses and doctors in the ICU at VGH for their outstanding kindness and care.

Paul was an archetypical professor but an unassuming and cheerful person . He had a wonderful assembly of collectable beer cans. I wish he had told me about Carthage.

I was lucky enough to meet Paul several times in Mainz, Germany, both at the Johannes Gutenberg University and at the "Haus des Deutschen Weines". Meeting him is an enriching and lasting memory for me, both academically and personally. I will keep both his erudition and his kindness in honourable memory.

I very much appreciated Paul´s kind, considerate presence on the few occasions we all met when visiting my sister in Vancouver.
Sending deepest condolences, and gentlest of hugs, to dear Eileen and to her family.
