PAUL STOTT Obituary

Paul Stott died unexpectedly, at his home in Toronto on February 6, 2025, in his 81st year. Paul is lovingly remembered by Lynne (Christie), his wife of 57 years; sisters-in-law, Jane (Paul), Mary Stott; and brother-in-law, Bill (Sheila). Uncle Paul will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nephews: one arriving just as Paul was leaving us. He was predeceased by parents, Mary and Jack; brother, Ian; and sister-in-law, Tiffany Henderson. Paul will also be missed by the many friends and chosen families he and Lynne had in Toronto and around the world, including dear friends from their many travels, and their year living in Swaziland, where Paul worked for CIDA. Paul was deeply involved in the United Church of Canada throughout his life and was a long-standing member of Trinity-St. Paul's. Following his early retirement from teaching computer science at Ryerson University (TMU), he enrolled at Emmanuel College where he received a Master of Theology degree. Paul served the wider church as staff and volunteer and chose to become a Licensed Lay Worship Leader at the age of 75. Paul loved music and followed Drum Corps Championships around North America. The Hymn Society's meetings replaced Drum Corps in later years and Paul was inspired to write a number of hymns for his own congregation. A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity-St. Paul's United Church on Friday, February 28th, with gathering at 11:00 and service at 11:30, followed by a reception. For the online service details, email [email protected]. Donations may be made to Trinity-St. Paul's United Church or United Church's Mission and Service Fund.

As a student of Paul's in the late 1970s, I always admired his teaching style. Paul's passion for teaching was evidenced by his meticulous attention to detail and solid preparedness. I was honoured to volunteer alongside Paul and his mother for some of Toronto's 'Miles for Millions' walkathons and it was a pleasure to work with him decades later in the University's computer department. Paul had a significant formative impact on my life and was as professional as a man can be. I am so sorry for the loss that must be felt by Lynne and by Paul's extended family.

I met Paul when we served together on the United Church's Nominations Committee and the planification of the General Council in Ottawa in 2012. It was a real blessing to have known him. I made a donation to M&S in his name. I will keep his loved ones in my prayers for the coming days.

Paul & Lynne are long time dear friends from Swaziland and Ontario. Gracious and generous hosts for many years. Paul composed a hymn for our 50th anniversary. Thanks be to God for Paul's life and legacy.
