Paul WILKINSON Obituary

PAUL FRANK WILKINSON 1948 -2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Wilkinson at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on December 19, 2021. He is predeceased by his wife, Doh, of 42 years. December 19 was also their wedding anniversary. He will be missed by his children Melanie and Chris (Melissa). He was 'Granpaul' to his grandchildren Kyla, Nathaniel, Griffin, and Jace. He is predeceased by his parents, Jack and Ruth Wilkinson. Paul was a University Professor Emeritus at York University. He served as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, as Chair of Senate, and on the Board of Governors. As a true professor of geography and a tourism scholar, he loved to travel the world and had many fond memories of sabbaticals, especially in France. He will be missed by his many friends and colleagues, including those from his countless trips to the Caribbean. Caring for the planet was very important to him. He was honored to be bestowed the J.B. Harkin Conservation Award by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society along with his colleagues for their work to better protect Canada's national parks. He also was very proud of all his students and their achievements to better the world we live in, many of whom were like extended family to him and our mom. He would ask that donations in his memory be given to the Wilkinson Family Graduate Award in Environmental Studies at York University: https://giving.yorku.ca/ PaulWilkinson. This award was very dear to our parents in supporting students and their passions for protecting the environment. At his request, there will be no service. We are confident that he's now out travelling the world in spirit with our mom and continuing their great adventures.

I thought of your dad and mom today when we were clearing out our photo album. I checked on the web and ran across your lovely obituary. Sad. We had unfortunately lost touch with them before your mother died. However, we do have many fond memories of our times with them both in France and in north Toronto.
My condolences to you both.
Sincerely,
Mary

From Paul and Dorothy's wedding vows in Ottawa, Canada, to their Boler trailer trip to Alaska, to their Toronto home renovations, to their shared University of Toronto affiliations, to the appreciation of Indigenous art, their large foot print touched many interests, as Dorothy's next youngest sibling of 5 in the family, thank-you Paul for the great space that you brought to the lives of your family and community. RIP. /p

We were friends since early 1970´s. Doh and Paul visited twice our home in Finland and our daughter Tiiu were two weeks at their home in Canada. Several last years we sended long letters to each other. Paul was a very warm and friendly person. Our thoughts are with you, Melanie and Chris!

Paul and I attended York as undergraduates together, became great friends, and also served as each other's best man at our weddings. We lost touch as our lives and careers drew us in different directions. My condolences to you and your family.
