Paulette Françoise Josette Collet obituary

Paulette Collet Obituary

Our beloved and extraordinary "Madame" passed away suddenly, after a rehearsal with La Troupe des Anciens, on February 13, 2026, at the age of 99. Adored and adoring wife of Tom Mezei for 43 years. Paulette was born in Verviers, Belgium. After earning her doctorate in French Canadian literature at Université Laval in Quebec City, she taught at universities in the US before settling at the University of Toronto in 1967. In 1969, she began the course in classical French, focusing on Molière, that led to the remarkable 56-year journey that became La Troupe des Anciens. For her passionate commitment to French language and culture, Paulette received France's prestigious Ordre des Palmes Académiques and the Société d'Histoire de Toronto's Prix Jean-Baptiste Rousseaux. Paulette was beautiful, elegant, charming, a wonderful hostess, and author of numerous educational and academic texts. Outspoken but never falsely flattering, she was generous, kind and loyal. She will be greatly missed by her Belgian cousins, Francine Fagerburg (Ted) and Anne (Thomas); sister-in-law, Kathy Mezei (Bob); niece, Robin (Jay); nephew, Luc (Katrie); and her devoted actors and friends. Very special thanks to Eli Morad, Sylvia Soyka and Elisabeth Widner for their assistance and friendship. At Paulette's request, there will be no funeral; a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. If desired, donations may be made to the UHN Hospital Foundation.

Dear Tom
I didn´t know Paulette well but I adored chatting with her. She was not only an elegant and outspoken woman but also one full of intelligence and laughter. I always felt good after we talked, always admiring her wit and joy in all the activities she organized and participated in. She was gracious and modest; definitely one of a kind: we shall not look upon her like again. We all will miss her. My condolences to Tom and family.

Paulette was an inspiration to me: A real force of nature. I chatted with her several a week when we'd see each other in our condo's gym. So bright, vivacious and colourful, I dream a life as rich and varied for everyone. Enormous sympathy to her wonderful husband, Thomas.

Paulette was a most gracious and charming woman, and a wonderful neighbor. We had many wonderful occasions to be in her company. She shared many beautiful stories of her childhood with me. Our most sincerest condolences to Tom and the rest of her family.

I got to know Paulette since I moved into Carlton on the Park & she often was my gym buddy. A regular at our gym, just seeing her in the gym or knowing she will be there inspired & motivated me to come down for my daily workouts. Clearly a well accomplished person, it was a pleasure to have known her, even though short.. Rest in Peace Paulette

Paulette was a lovely and charming condo owner at 130 Carlton.

She had class, was always elegant and stylish. I enjoyed our chats in the gym where she was amazing and fit for her age.

She was a role model and an example to us all.

I shall miss her as I am certain her lovely Tom will ad well.
