Peter CLARK Obituary

THE HONOURABLE PETER M. CLARK, Q.C. November 18, 1942 - High River, Alberta March 23, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta The Honourable Peter M. Clark of Calgary died peacefully on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at the age of 78 in the presence of his loving wife, Sunny. Peter was born on November 18, 1942 to Charles and Grace Clark in High River, AB. In the fall of 1962 Peter moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta. He interrupted his studies to spend a year travelling Europe and North Africa in 1963/64, but returned to earn a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. He then had a brief career as a social worker with the Saskatchewan Department of Welfare in North Battleford, where he worked predominantly with young offenders and he became determined to pursue a career in the law. He enrolled at the University of New Brunswick and earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1970. Peter had a distinguished career as a lawyer and a judge. He articled at and became a partner of the Calgary firm that is today known as Burnett, Duckworth and Palmer. In 1985 he joined the partnership at Atkinson McMahon and in 1995 he was appointed a Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. He was also appointed a Deputy Justice of the North West Territories in 2007 and of Nunavut in 2010. Though his professional achievements were many, his success and the greatest joys in his life are attributable to his love for family, his compassion for others, the ease with which he could build rapport, his mentorship of young and aspiring lawyers and his deep appreciation for his roots. Possessed with a quick wit, a wonderful sense of humour and great curiosity, Peter made friends easily and often. He was an outdoorsman and a traveller, with a keen sense of adventure. He will be remembered for preferring an uncharted course and the freedom to wander to anyone else's itinerary. Peter's love, support and spirit will be forever felt by his wife of twenty-four years, Sunny; the children of their combined family, Sheila Delaney Duke (Dan), Brendan Clark (Tricia), Scott Delaney (Jaimie Holland) and Andrew Clark (Sara); his brother, The Right Honourable Joe Clark (Maureen McTeer); grandchildren, Meghan Duke, Emily Duke, Liam Clark, Riley Clark, Scarlett Clark, Leighton Clark and Madelyn Clark; and his nieces, Simone Leblanc (Diana Burgoyne) and Catherine Clark (Chad Schella). A Celebration of Peter's Life will be held when circumstances permit. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Peter's obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com. If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of their choice. The family would like to thank the staff of the Westview Unit of the Intercare Brentwood Care Centre for their compassionate care in the final years of Peter's life, and in particular for their remarkable dedication and bravery through the last year. In living memory of Peter Clark, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

My condolence.

I remember Peter as a fine, humble, understanding man to the staff when Grace was a patient in the nursing home.

As some people journey through our life, they leave footprints wherever they go, footprints of kindness and love, courage and compassion, humor and inspiration. Even when they are gone, we can still look back and clearly see the trail they left behind. My thoughts and condolences are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Sunny, Brendan and Andrew. My deepest sympathies to you and your families. I will always remember Peter as a very dear friend who was always there to lend a helping hand when needed. I remember several occasions when his sage advice and intervention helped us through some stressful times. He was always a true friend.
His spontaneous laugh and sense of humour was infectious and is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of Peter.
He will be missed and never forgotten.
I wish you all peace and comfort during this very difficult time.
