PETER DIAMANT Obituary

October 7, 1940 - December 25, 2024 Beloved husband of Ruth Diamant (Barnes); uncle of Stephanie, Jodi, Daphne (Derek) and Andrea (James); brother of the late Dr. Nicholas Diamant (Barbara); and predeceased by his parents, John and Sophia Diamant. Peter earned a B.A. at Queen's University, Kingston, a B.Arch. at the University of Manitoba and a MSc. (Econ) at the London School of Economics. In Winnipeg he was the first architect of the Manitoba Housing Corporation, and he served the Manitoba government in the Department of Urban Affairs becoming Deputy Minister. He chaired the Manitoba Municipal Board for several years. Peter wrote a number of research papers on urban planning and governance and, for a short time, had his own column in a Winnipeg newspaper. Peter and Ruth spent many years sailing on Lake of the Woods and, over a nine-year period, sailing around Turkey, the Black Sea and the eastern Mediterranean. Peter loved being with friends and family, reading, writing and debating. Peter was a mischievous and wonderfully adventurous uncle, enthusiastically up for travel and family get-togethers wherever they might be, in Canada, London, France, Greece or Belgium. He generously shared his love of art, music and culture, supporting and encouraging the pursuits of his nieces with joy and pride in all their achievements. And was thought of as their "cool" uncle in the Barnes/Wynia family. Peter's approach to life was loving, calm, positive and "can do." He is greatly missed by the Diamant and the Barnes families.

Peter and I grew up together in Kingston and we were part of a group of friends who gathered most days at his place, where his remarkable mother welcomed and fed us with pleasure. Peter was always the curious and creative person he later showed himself to be during his long career in public service. We saw little of each other after he moved west, apart from a memorable visit to our home a year or so ago. Despite this, he has always been a reminder of those important early friendships that shape one´s perspective and values. I was very sad to hear of his death and Judi and I wish Ruth all the strength she will need to deal with this loss.

Dear Ruth & family! Our most sincere condolences. I worked with Peter throughout the Core Area Initiative days and was always a big fan of his. In his vision for what the inner city could become, his collaborative skill in achieving our mutual goals & objectives, and his easy-going friendly manner. Peter was a superb example of how to make things work! All best wishes, Jo-Ann & Ken

Here are some of the comments of Peter´s cycling buddies.

I admired Peter´s determination to keep cycling even after a number of medical issues. He became a good friend and I will miss him.

Peter was a joy to have along on our rides and coffee breaks.

We will surely miss Peter. He was quite a character and always had interesting stories to share during our coffee stops.

Peter was a kind and gentle man. He often had valuable comments and interesting insights. I always admired his joy and interest in life and activities. Rides wont be the same without him.

We will miss Peter on our rides and especially for his contributions to our coffee conversations.

Peter was someone I admired greatly, and I'm grateful that our life paths crossed. I'll think of Peter often and miss him.
