Peter ENNALS Obituary

DR. PETER ENNALS1943 - 2023 Born in Invermere BC September 9,1943, son of the late Rev. Bernard F. Ennals and Ruth (Rodger) Ennals, Peter attended school in New Westminster and Brampton. He was a proud graduate of Victoria College, University of Toronto earning Hon BA (1967) MA (1968) and PhD (1978) degrees in Geography. He began teaching at Queen's University (1972-74) then ventured east to Sackville NB where he taught generations of students at Mount Allison University until his retirement in 2007. Over his years at MtA he also served as Head of the Geography and Environment Department (1979-80,1986-97), Dean of Social Sciences (1992-97) and Vice-President Academic and Research (1998-2002) and was honoured with the title of Professor Emeritus in 2008. Specializing in the field of historical geography Peter published numerous academic articles, authored contributions to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography and the Historical Atlas of Canada and, with Deryck Holdsworth, co-authored the book Homeplace; The Making of the Canadian Dwelling over Three Centuries (University of Toronto Press, 1998). He served as Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Kwansei Gakuin University (1986-87) which led to the development of Japanese programs at MtA and to the publication of his second book Opening a Window to the West; the Foreign Concession at Kobe, Japan, 1868-1899 (University of Toronto Press, 2014). On July 19, 2023 Peter passed away in Hamilton ON. Beloved husband of Cheryl (White) Ennals; cherished father of Sarah Ennals (Andrew Specht) and Andrew Ennals; dear brother of Margaret (Ennals) Edwards (David Edwards), Peter was truly "a gentleman and a scholar" and is greatly missed by his family, colleagues, students and friends. I was a student at Mount Allison and Peter was my Head Coach of the Rugby Club , he was such wonderful positive influence, he made me a better person , I am saddened by the news of his passing, great man .

I was a classmate of Peter at UofT. I remember him with great fondness and respect. I never look at a barn without thinking of Peter. As I recall, his Master's Thesis dealt with various barn types in Southern Ontario.
Heartfelt condolences to all who loved him and were loved by him.
