Peter FLEMINGTON Obituary

PETER JOHN FLEMINGTON August 12, 1936 - December 17, 2020 Of Toronto, and later Clarkson, Ontario. He died peacefully at their residence, The Millwood in Leaside, Toronto, at the age of 84. Dear friend and husband of Jean for 60 years. Proud father of Kerstin McCutcheon (Ryan) and Allen Flemington (Krista). Bub to Jessica and Mark McCutcheon and Hannah and Sarah Flemington. Peter was born in Toronto, the son of the late Jessie and Carl and brother of Shirley Tait (Don) of Ottawa. He was a graduate of Forest Hill Collegiate, Mount Allison University, and the Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania. An alumnus of the BBC, long time broadcaster, film journalist, writer, producer, teacher, and a founder and programming head of Vision TV. Peter was a keen advocate for diversity in public media and for social justice here and abroad. For many years he and Jean and the family were active members of Fairlawn Avenue United Church in North Toronto. They both had roots in the Maritimes and in later years they spent increasing time in their beloved 1850s home on the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, a place which thrives on the visitation of family and friends. Cremation has taken place and there will be a committal service later in Jean's hometown of Sackville, New Brunswick when family can all gather. Peter was especially interested in supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, www.JDRF.ca

Jean: I am so sorry to be reading of Peter´s death ... more than a year ago now and so please accept my apologies for my tardiness in sending you and your family my deepest sympathies. I have many happy memories of our times with the two of you both in Mississauga and in Joggins. Jim and I are wintering in London, England now, returning home to Oakville for the summers. Listening to Elgar´s music on BBC Radio 3 the other day, I suddenly thought of the Vale of Evesham and also of you and Peter. I hope you are well; please know that I am thinking of you at this sad time in your life. Myrna

It is only just now, while retrieving footage from a memorable odyssey in 1997 to Fez, Morocco that Peter, without a blink, sent me on, that I have sadly learned of his passing. His love of, and commitment to so many varieties of sacred music was only one of the huge gifts he gave.

I have just stumbled onto Peter’s obituary, learning that he just recently passed away. I'm honestly heartbroken. Peter was an amazing boss with an outstanding work ethic, he led by example. I adored and respected him greatly. Peter supported me during a very difficult time in my life for which I will forever be grateful. I feel a deep sense of loss in reading all the messages about him. My condolences to the family that loved Peter so very much, and the world that no longer gets to have him within it. I am grateful that my life has been touched by such an incredible man. God Bless you Peter.

Peter Flemington was a true friend of independent doc makers as he fostered a whole genre of progressive filmmaking through the early years of Vision TV. His vision of spirituality as social and political justice was unique in the broadcasting world and he dared to broadcast documentaries that others would not. He was a courageous one-off in an industry that rarely would take a chance on point-of-view docs. Those who knew him were fortunate to benefit from his fighting spirit and outrage against the injustice he saw in society. We will miss his vision and his drive.

Words can’t express how grateful I am for having worked at VisionTV and meeting amazing people like Peter Flemington. Apart from his impressive career, he was a loving and caring family man who I was honoured to have known.

Years ago, Peter wrote a piece about me in the Great Viewer’s Guide that I’ll never forget and that I still have with me as a reminder of my time at Vision.

God Bless Peter and his wonderful family. People like him should never be taken for granted. It was a pleasure knowing and working with him.

In 1983 we joined Fairlawn United Church and soon became good friends with Pete and Jean. They were great supporters of the arts. Together with a several other friends we enjoyed for years plays at the Tarragon and Canadian stage theatres.
Jean and Pete were very hospitable and generous and loved to entertain. We enjoyed delightful visits at Denbigh and Joggins.
For years it was a New Years tradition to ring in the next year at rotating pot luck suppers.
They introduced our family to Mount Allison University and consequently our oldest child
Graduated from there. We attended several Vanier Cups, the best being the year Mount Allison played. So many happy memories, so many laughs.
Yours was a life well lived Pete. You were a fine gentleman.
Love to you and Jean.

I met Peter in the early 70s in Lusaka Zambia. He had travelled from Toronto for a Berkeley Film Studios documentary and I was to be his soundman. I was only with him for three or four days but he impressed me with his warmth and calmness. Many years later I came to live in Toronto but, sadly, our paths never crossed. My condolences to his family and friends.

My mom, Betty Richardson, was so incredibly fond of Peter ... and of Jean. Peter’s energy and warmth will be greatly missed by many. I’m sure my mom is in the reception line up there welcoming him enthusiastically and sending whole-hearted love to his family.

Dear Kerstin,Peter and Families,
So sorry for the passing of your Father It isn’t easy.
Grief is like the tide, it comes in an out and hopefully over time your grief will be replaced with memories you can cherish.
Your Father and our shared love of the Bay of Fundy is well explained in
Song:
“That as sure as the sunrise
As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees
We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean ...And then we rise again!!”
Our deepest sympathy to you all
Mary, David, Barb and family

Dear Jean and family . I am so sad to learn of Peter's passing . I can't begin to express how much I and so many others were profoundly enriched by having known him. He was a mentor,a supportive leader and one of the most principled and honorable persons I've known. I was always taken by his humility, warmth and humour - A brilliant wonderful wise man who inspired so many of us. I count myself lucky to have worked at Vision under his leadership. He will be so sadly missed and always remembered by so many. Jean you and he were such a terrific team. I send you and your family my deepest condolences. With love, Marsha Coffey

It was a joy to see him as a mentor and role model -- seeking out his warm smiling face, wry commentary and uplifting conversation at many media industry events. A lovely man whose kindness, wit and wisdom -- I will always remember. Wishing you Peace.

Dearest Jean, Kerstin, Allen, and your families,

Although I am deeply saddened to hear of Peter’s leaving this world, I am deeply, profoundly grateful for his time in it. Your loss is keen, and I am very thankful to you for sharing so much of it with us in your letter.

Perhaps I don’t have to tell you that Peter was the most influential person in my career for more than 40 years. I’ve repeated some of his advice in the last two weeks. “Work” may sound like a trivial influence, compared to life. However, Peter’s skill, focus, commitment, integrity, faith, and work ethic helped shape what I hold to be most deeply important. And yes, Kindness.

Thoughts, love, and prayers are with you,
Rita Shelton Deverell, Rex Deverell, Shelton Ramsay Deverell

So sorry for this news. Pete , Jean and family were an important part of the Minudie Christmas Eve service for many, many years. As well, they appreciated the Lower Cove Christmas tree, flat on one side due to the strong winds, but it fit well against the window. Pam Harrison and family.
