Peter Cowperthwaite GODSOE obituary

Peter GODSOE Obituary

Peter Cowperthwaite Godsoe Peter Cowperthwaite Godsoe died on December 13, 2023, surrounded by his beloved wife and three children. Peter loved his family, friends, colleagues, community and country. Growing up in Toronto with three siblings, he enjoyed hockey, golf, pool, cards, and getting up to his fair share of trouble. He met the love of his life, Shelagh, in high school; married 60 years, he remained devoted to 'his bride' the entire time. Peter graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Toronto and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He spent his entire career at Scotiabank, rising from a teller to the Chairman and CEO. As Chairman and CEO, he shepherded the bank and its 40,000 employees spread across 30 countries to unparalleled success, growing it from the fifth largest to the second largest Canadian bank and the second largest Canadian company. He was also a leader in Canadian business more broadly, serving on the boards of numerous companies globally including Barrick Gold Corporation, Empire Company Limited, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Ingersoll-Rand Company, Lonmin PLC, Onex Corporation, Rogers Communications Inc., Sobeys Inc., and Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust. Among many awards and recognitions, Peter was awarded the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario and the Order of Jamaica, and was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. He also received honorary degrees from Concordia University, Dalhousie University, University of King's College, and University of Western Ontario. Peter was renowned for his push for equality, immense generosity, and sense of fun. Peter intentionally hired women, people of color and non-Christians, and led numerous clubs and associations he was part of into more integration - something not common in the 1970s, '80s, or even '90s. His generosity is legendary - whether it was serving his community as Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario, on the boards of Mt. Sinai Hospital, the Canadian Opera Company and Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, or simply meeting with a recent college graduate interested in finance. Peter had time for everyone, listening intently and offering encouragement and sound advice. Making connections with everyone he met was really his superpower; we continue to hear about his personal greetings and kindnesses to so many. It is really hard to imagine how he found the time! But he did, and still had plenty of time for family and fun. Gregarious with a self-deprecating and humble sense of humour, Peter was a crack pool, hearts and craps player. The consummate family man, he loved to spend time with Shelagh, watching James Bond movies, listening to - or dancing enthusiastically to - Neil Diamond, and travelling to almost 100 countries together. He taught and supported his children in so many ways - with their careers, relationships, and through life's ups and downs. He kept his cheer and unflappable practicality on a dozen family car trips to Nova Scotia and Florida (from Toronto!!), where he captained a 'bounceball' team with kids and family friends. More recently, Peter embraced time with his five grandchildren with characteristic enthusiasm: fishing, golfing, playing croquet and darts, watching endless plays in the Simcoe cottage basement, and taking them for ice cream daily or to an indoor waterpark annually. Peter's was truly a life well lived - he loved and was loved immensely, he always gave more than he took, and he impacted so many lives for the better. He will be dearly missed by so many, especially great love and best friend, Shelagh; children, Craig Godsoe (Charles Melanson), Eden Godsoe (Jim King) and Cynthia Godsoe; grandchildren, Jonas Pitt, Kellan King, Mirabelle Pitt, Chapel King and Sebastian Pitt; as well as sister, Valerie Godsoe; sister-in-law, Dale Godsoe; nieces and nephews, Suzanne Godsoe, Stacey Godsoe, Laura Godsoe and Derek Delost; and so many friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerry and Margaret Godsoe; brother, Gerald Godsoe; sister, Jane Delost; and brother-in-law, Ed Reburn. Thank you to Mt. Sinai and St. Michael's Hospitals for your excellent care. Special thank you to Shirley McFee, Shawn Crawford and Carol Brydges for always being there for Peter and the Godsoe family. We will share more information about a celebration of Peter's life to be held in Toronto in late Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Mt. Sinai Hospital or a Charity of Your Choice.

I met Peter in 2008 as the recipient of his namesake scholarship in International Finance at the University of Toronto. I knew of him via my father, Michael Blair, who had worked with Peter and Borden Osmak during the early 1990's and always said they had the most integrity of any banker he had ever met. For my part in meeting him I was impressed with his intelligence, humor and ease of speaking with. He had learned the names and bios of all the students in the room (there were several of us) and spoke as if he knew us all already. It's a rare skill that I've remembered to this day. I am sorry to learn of his passing and know his family must feel lucky to have had him in their lives for so long. Having recently lost my father I understand the feeling well.

I didn´t have the good fortune to meet Peter - I am friends with his son. In knowing what a smart, generous, respectful and kind person his son is, I was certain that Peter was also an amazing man - and that has been reinforced many times over through reading all the accounts of him here. My sincerest condolences to Mrs Godsoe and the Godsoe family.

Mr. and Mrs. Godsoe have been wonderfully generous benefactors to Mount Sinai Hospital with a particular focus on providing excellent care of older people. Their generosity has helped to endow the Dr. Don Melady Chair in Geriatric Emergency Medicine which will have a huge impact for decades to come. It is sad to lose such a fine and socially committed man. All of my condolences to Mrs. Godsoe and the whole family.

I had the honour of helping recruit Peter as Western´s Chancellor and to work with he and Shelagh to celebrate graduating students. Peter would shake everyone´s hand and congratulate them on a job well done, as they embarked on their next phase of life. He gave so selflessly of his time in doing this despite his more than full-time at the bank. He was selfless in his commitment and always had a twinkle in his eye. Canada has lost a truly wonderful man. My deepest condolences to the entire Godsoe family. May Peter´s life be a blessing to you. Ted Garrard, C.M.

Peter Godsoe was a mentor to me and I had the pleasure of serving as President and CEO of Scotia Group Jamaica for 13 years.

He confirmed my appointment and as a person of color I benefitted from his firm belief in diversity.

Peter loved Jamaica and in the last 6 months of his tenure as Chairman and CEO he saved the Jamaican economy from total collapse.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to Shelaigh and all his family.

I worked for Scotiabank. As a young person in the Bank I won an award and Mr. Godsoe was so gracious and me me feel so comfortable. I learned from him to not be intimidated by a title that we are all just people at the core. That is a lesson I have carried forward throughout my career as a banker and a small business owner. Such an amazing legacy to leave for his family. Thank you for sharing him with the Scotia family all those years.

It was a real privilege and honour to work under Mr. Godsoe's leadership at my early career at Scotiabank. Re promoting equality, I recall he gave up his seat for me at a round table discussion of a project which I worked on as an analyst. "You want to be an outsider?" The other male executives all got up.
I was surprised/thrilled by his enormous sense of humour, telling lots of jokes, sometimes hilarious, before his Chairmanship. Known for his photographic memory, enormous capacity to read/absorb (the famous Green pencil), and various athletic abilities, he also sat on multiple boards, a true role model for kindness and shirt sleeve executives (Harvard type, called me "Pete".
He will be deeply missed, especially your genuine smile!

Many years ago, I was lucky enough to have earned the opportunity to have lunch with Peter and other SB management. He was sharing a story about how much traffic he encountered while driving to his cottage in the summer. I was silly enough to ask if his cottage was winterized. Without missing a beat, he kindly responded, yes it is and we also enjoy it in the colder weather. I felt like a complete idiot for asking the question especially when I found out that he had a retractable roof on the pool of the cottage. Peter was so gracious and didn't make me feel like a fool. Thank you Peter for your leadership and kindness.

Very sorry to hear of Mr. Godsoe's passing. I started my 38 year career at Scotiabank December 1980 at 44 King Street. It wasn't until I was at an office Christmas party after I transferred to The Mony Life building December 1081 that I met him. After an unfortunate accident between someone's drink and my shoulder that resulted in my wearing said drink, Albert Wabhe came over to introduce me to his boss Peter. In my state of distress I was frantically trying to mop up the stain on my dress. Peter kindly offered to assist which made us all laugh and put me at ease. As I had only transferred a couple of days before, I asked another secretary who 'Peter' was. That was when I realized I had just met Mr. Godsoe! Downtown he was referred as Mr. whereas in Don Mills everyone was on a first named basis. He visited Albert often and was always friendly and easy to talk with. Such a sweet man. I was very proud to be part of his team under his direction. He was a wonderful leader. My condolences to the Godsoe family.
