Peter HERRNDORF Obituary

PETER ALEXANDER HERRNDORF C.C., O. Ont. Peter Herrndorf, champion of stories and storytellers, a giant of journalism, broadcasting, and the arts, died of cancer on February 18, at the age of 82, surrounded by his family. Peter has left an indelible mark on the cultural life of Canada. Born in Amsterdam, he arrived in Winnipeg at the age of 8, and his extraordinary career sprang from an unshakeable love of his adopted country. As he grew, he learned about Canada through its stories - by reading Canadian books, listening to CBC Radio, and singing Canadian songs in choirs. Although he graduated from both Dalhousie Law School, and received his MBA from the Harvard Business School, he was attracted to journalism, where his quest for telling stories began. After working briefly as a reporter for the Brandon Sun, he started at CBC, eventually rising to become Vice President of English Services during one of its most successful eras. During his tenure, he developed programs like The Fifth Estate and moved The National to 10 p.m., pairing it with the highly acclaimed public affairs program The Journal. He believed passionately in public broadcasting. As a leader, he enabled talent and ideas to flourish - a gift he would share throughout his professional life, including at Toronto Life as publisher, at TVOntario as Chairman and CEO, and then, for nearly 19 years, as President and CEO of the National Arts Centre. His career in the arts - another realm of storytelling - was just as exceptional. He put the "national" back in the National Arts Centre, spurring it to play a strong role across Canada through national Scene festivals, orchestra tours, and education. Some of his proudest achievements were the establishment of the NAC Foundation, the creation of the Indigenous Theatre - a watershed moment for Indigenous arts and the country, the magnificent architectural rejuvenation of the NAC building on the Rideau Canal, and the National Creation Fund, which has allowed dozens of ambitious new Canadian works to succeed on stages at home and abroad. Unfailingly generous, Peter served on more than 60 boards. He co-founded, along with Brian Robertson, the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. Most recently he was the highly engaged Chair of Luminato, Toronto's International Festival of Arts and Ideas. His many awards and honours include 10 honorary degrees. In 2017, he was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest level, for his outstanding service to the country. Since he fell ill in December, hundreds of people have written or called to say how much Peter meant to them, the lessons he taught them, how his example represented vision and leadership, as much as it did kindness and compassion. Despite his remarkable achievements in every arena he entered, he was, above all else, a man of great humanity and warmth with an unparalleled capacity for kindness and curiosity. He was known for his endless lists, his birthday serenades, his booming laugh, his multiple Rolodexes and his annual Christmas cards, each containing a personal message. Somewhere, he found time to devour books, inhale politics, and watch and read about his many favourite sports. Peter was never quite successful in convincing the love of his life, Eva Czigler, his wife of 42 years, to share his passion for sports, even though, by some irony, they met watching Mohammed Ali's 'Rumble in the Jungle' in 1974. He fared far better with their two children, Katherine and Matthew, who were his frequent companions at Jays and Raptors games and inherited his love of reading and politics. Sunday night dinners were a not-to-be-missed noisy ritual, often including sister-in-law Madeleine Czigler, niece Laura Piscaer, nephew Marcus and his family. Matthew and his wife, Agustina Silva, gifted Peter and Eva with their first grandchild in November. Nico brought much needed light and joy to Peter during his final months. There was a special place in his heart for his brother Fred, his many nieces and nephews and sister Kiki Delaney (Ian), whom he loved and admired enormously. Peter witnessed first-hand the hard work and dedication of the medical and nursing staff at Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Bridgepoint Palliative Care. We thank Dr Neil Fleshner and Dr Srikala Sridhar for their excellent medical care at PMH. Daisy Darna was the CEO of "Team Peter", aided skillfully by Rizelda and Joy. The family owes them huge thanks for their endless care and love. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Luminato Festival Toronto, The National Arts Centre Foundation, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, or a Charity of Your Choice. Visitation will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd, on Friday, February 24, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A celebration of Peter's rich life will take place at a later date.

I was new in Canada when we met at CBC in 1976, and can never forget his counsel and friendshi over the years since, altho unfortunately, we lost touch over the last decade, something I meant to revert, alas, only too late. My sincere condolences to Eva and family. He will live on through you and through all of us who so loved and admired him.

Dear Eva, Katherine and Matthew,
Unfortunately I was on vacation until now and could not acknowledge or attend the memorial for Peter. I am very sad to hear of his passing. Please accept my sincere condolences. My happy memories from over a decade working with Peter at Toronto Life magazine are numerous. To me he was a great and generous boss, a mentor, a teacher, a confidant, a friend, and so very kind.
Laughter, Compassion, Dedication are just a few words that come to me when i think of Peter. His admiration and love for you,Eva. His over the moon excitement when you were expecting your children. Our bi monthly lunches, CRMA meetings in the States and special business accomplishments will always remain special occasions in my heart.
His involvement helping the many cultural institutions in Toronto and Ottawa were such significant and admirable contributions. He was amazing.

I know you, his family will miss him terribly but i hope that the many expressions of admiration and love for Peter from the many, many people he has touched will bring some comfort .

Thank you Peter.... We worked hard together and it was a lot of Fun. Christine

I had the privilege of working with Peter on a research project about the Canadian film industry when he was the publisher of Toronto Life. I still marvel at his knack for getting the best out of people simply by showing that he believed they were capable of doing their best. In return they gave him nothing less, and Canadians and Canadian culture are the better for it.

We were out of the country when we learned of Peter´s passing. He was a great man who was always so interested in hearing about how we were doing. Stimulating conversations were guaranteed to be in the offing when getting together. We know how much he will be missed by Eva, Katherine, Matthew, the Herrndorf family as well as his community. Warmest condolences.

Dearest Eva, Katherine, Matthew, Kiki - - Speak _ Peter Herrndorf and three words leap to mind - dynamic - visionary - and above all, a Leader. I´ve said it before, and shout it out now - we could coin a word, HERRNDORFIAN, to mean all these and more, but then again, could we use it on anyone else? There can be no speaking of Peter as `was´. He is - a true Titan with an indelible imprint on our Canadian consciousness. I feel so blessed, to count myself (among the legions) who firsthand, Peter supported, advised, promoted, enlisted, befriended, sang to and chose - for decades of risks and adventures. Can there be anyone (other than you Eva), who could have even intersected with him on all those Trails he's blazed? --- at the CBC, Toronto Life, TVO, Stratford Festival, Governor General´s Performing Arts Awards, UoT, un-countable boards, councils, committees and foundations - and of course! - The National Arts Centre. I witnessed I experienced Peter forging - a potent, vibrant identity for the NAC, re-birthing as a dynamic and truly national centre of creativity - a forceful catalyst for performance, conception and learning that has galvanized Canada´s artistic cultural scene. At once, collegial and inspiring - a Leader beyond compare, Peter´s curiosity, brilliance, sensitivity and wit, his profound belief in the artist and his hearty full-throttled laugh - I cherish with brimming heart. Love to you, Veronica x

Dear Eva, Matthew, Katherine, family, and friends,
I offer my sincerest sympathy for your loss.
I was lucky enough to work at TVOntario when Peter began his role as the public broadcaster´s CEO in 1992.
I recall the article of his appointment that was posted in the TVO hallways showed a picture of him that made many comment on his resemblance to actor Sean Connery.
I wish I can find that picture but my online searches have come up empty.
I was even luckier to have the honour to work directly for Peter for a short period of time as a junior executive assistant. During that time, on occasion, he´d come sit in the reception area where I sat and we´d talk about all sorts of things, including debates around technology and its usefulness. Alas, his multiple rolodexes continued to sit behind me and were manually accessed on a daily basis.
Since then, I feel very fortunate to have had many one-on-one chats with him over the years. And it was through those chats that my life and career were shaped in so many impactful and positive ways. I owe these profound changes to Peter.
I wished him happy birthday yearly and for his most recent birthday my outreach was no different.
His reply email of thanks included the fact that he "missed our conversations" and hope we´d "get a chance to catch up in the coming year."
My heart breaks that it won´t happen.
Since his passing, I´ve thought about my memories of him and, for that, I am grateful.
I only hope that you, too, will find comfort in the stories and memories you have as well as of those shared by others.
My sincerest sympathies.

Olga Cwiek and I send our deepest sympathies to Eva and her family, both immediate and extended. We both worked for and with Peter at CBC and saw, first-hand, his greatness, his warmth and empathy, his humor and impeccable sense of occasion, large or small. People will remember where they were and what they were doing when they learned of Peter's passing. Like so few before him. Peter's memory will endure, for us, as a personal and public gift. Dear Peter,
Thank you for demonstrating so many qualities that I admire. Humour and friendship were just two memorable traits in your remarkable understanding of the value of the creative process. A generation of artists has been well served.

Eva, my sincere apologies that I could not be you for the service.

Peter and I had connection going back to high school days in Winnipeg. He was editor of the Manitoban at the U of M and goy me to write an occasional column from my school in Boston. While we met occasionally over the intervening years, it was when he came to Ottawa and the NAC when we really connected as he asked me to advise on the creation of the NAC Foundation.
After that we met with some regularity, visits which were always a pleasure. Our last contact was a Christmas card this past December.
My wife and I will miss him immensely.

With Deepest Sympathy to all the family-

I met Peter twice, many years ago. The memory of his warmth, support, kindness, caring, and charm have stayed with me throughout the years. May all your good memories of him sustain you at this sad time.

When Frank Sinatra died, the great lyricist Gene Lees said "It feels like a mountain has disappeared."
That is how I felt learning of Peter's departure.
I was a staff writer at Toronto Life magazine when Peter was the publisher who finally took that award-winning journal to extraordinary financial viability, such a rare status in Canadian publishing.
Peter was indeed a "Godfather of the Arts," which only begins to describe why we loved him.
More memorable than his other gifts - his vision, patriotism, political savvy, and brilliance in business and organizational management - Peter made you believe in yourself. He made you know that you mattered and had your own great potential. In working with many wonderful leaders, I have not experienced such effective positive reinforcement, in all its charms, praise and anticipation of still more useful things he would have me achieve, than Peter conveyed with both kindness and resolve. He deserves a statue, to remind us that we can and must do better - with unfailing kindness.

Dear Eva and family, I am deeply sorry for your great loss.
Many people have spoken of profound gestures of friendship extended to them by Peter. I got to know Peter when he was head of CBC TV Current Affairs, and he named me as producer to head up the documentary interviews for the 1975 October Crisis docu-drama retrospective. Later he named me as a producer in the Montreal Documentary Unit that he created.
When my father died of cancer in 1981, at the age of 68, his funeral service took place in Toronto on a hot sunny May day. I had not paid attention to who was attending the service. But as I walked out of the hall there was Peter, giving me a big hug, and telling me how sorry he was for my loss. This kind of kindness sears itself in your heart. It certainly did in mine. In your grief, my heart is with you all and I am very sorry for your loss. Judith Murray

Matthew and family, I offer my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of working for your father while he was Chairman of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Board of Trustees. No one could chair a meeting as well as your Dad. I´m happy to have met you, sadly, at Mariana Silva´s wake - I knew Agustina as a child and am so pleased to hear that Peter got to be a grandfather. He leaves a legacy that must make all the family so proud to have shared his life.

I have had the enormous privilege of knowing Peter at the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Board of Directors. Although I knew him through work, I think I can say we soon became friends. He was a great man, a model, and a father to me, and this tribute is true in every aspect of his public life. I was also privileged to get his personal Christmas card every year. I will miss that, as I will miss a man I admired a lot. My most sincere condolences to his family.

We will not see his like again....Eva and family, your loss is shared by the entire country and indeed a global network of arts leaders and creators. Peter was always available for a call, or meeting, to help guide and mentor. I owe my return to Canada 17 years ago to his commitment to staying in touch with intrepid Canadians working in the field in the USA, and thanks to his recommendation I was given the incredible opportunity to lead the first 8-years of the Luminato Festival. Words cannot express how deeply Peter will be missed.
