MADDAUGH, Peter D., Q. C

We sadly announce that Peter died peacefully in his sleep in Victoria on Wednesday, June 20th after a sudden illness. Peter was devoted to his family and we cherished him. He was rock solid, forever a source of inspiration and strength to his family and friends. He was dignified, quirky, serious and lovable. Always the adventurer, Peter climbed the Japanese Alps, snorkeled in the Seychelles, kayaked mangrove swamps, and biked Bali, but he also ruthlessly hunted down dandelions in the garden. Peter was an intellect, a scholar, and a truly remarkable man. At the University of Toronto, he obtained an MA in History and a Law degree concurrently and did so well, he was awarded a scholarship to Harvard to complete a Masters degree in Law. Starting out as a Professor of Law and then Assistant Dean at Osgoode Hall in Toronto, next he entered private practice at Torys, specializing in Financial Institutions for many years, while also teaching at the University of Toronto and Osgoode. Teaching was his life-long passion. He wrote many legal works, including the Law of Restitution, which he co-authored with John McCamus, for which they received the David W. Mundell Medal and the Walter Owen Prize. Prime Minister Kim Campbell appointed him Queen's Counsel in 1991. 'Retiring' to Victoria, he became an Adjunct Professor at UVic, continued to write, did legal consulting, and actively participated on ten community and corporate Boards, chairing several. In addition to previous projects in many interesting countries, he then worked on major projects in Toronto, Ottawa, and Guyana. A private family service will be held to honour Peter. We will miss him dearly, but it was our good fortune to have known him. We thank everyone for your kind thoughts and support.
