PETER MADGETT Obituary

June 20, 1947 - September 12, 2025 Passed away peacefully, in his 79th year, in the Palliative Care Unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Coburg. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Fallis-Madgett (CM); his two children, Benjamin (Regina) and Anna (Aaron); his four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Joshua, Calliope and Clover; his two sisters, Patricia Fife (Rev. David) and Mary Russell (Rev. Dave); and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Dearness Madgett and Hope Patricia Twining. Peter was born and raised in Bloor West Village in Toronto and was interested in music from a young age. He graduated from the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, and subsequently worked as a professional musician in Toronto as a session player, respected teacher, member of the Toronto Chamber Players, Principal Double Bass of the Hamilton Philharmonic and, for over 30 years, member of the bass section in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Peter was a member of St. Thomas's Anglican Church, volunteering with the food ministry and supporting this faith community. He was an avid cook (having perfected a teriyaki chicken recipe that lives in the annals of family tradition.) He also loved motorcycles and rode his BMW to and from Roy Thompson Hall until the age of 50. Upon retirement, he was accepted into the adult art program at Central Tech, where he explored his love and talent for woodworking and visual art. Eight years ago, Peter and Mary Lou happily moved from downtown Toronto to Port Hope, Ontario, where they felt welcomed into the community and enjoyed gardening, reading, and family gatherings. Thank you to Dr. Francesco Mulé and the palliative care team at NHH, Rev. Canon Jesse Parker, as well as family and friends who stepped up to help ease his final days. Peter was grateful for the simple gifts in his life; love, music, books, family, friendship and faith. We witnessed his enjoyment of all of these. We love you Peter and you will be in our hearts forever. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Rushnell Funeral Home, 103 Mill St. N., Port Hope, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the food ministry at St. Thomas's Anglican Church in Toronto. Funeral on Friday, September 19, 2025, 2 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Port Hope, 33 Pine St. N.

Please accept my condolences. I´m a parishioner at St Thomas´s and knew Peter from his loyal service in the Friday Food Ministry. When the weather was fine, the FFM volunteers would often have a barbecue, which the guests appeared to thoroughly enjoy. I remember Peter happily wielding a spatula as he cooked hamburgers. He was kind, gentle fellow, and he is sorely missed.

Pete and I were classmates from grade 4 through to grade 13. During that time, I was one of the many young women who were in love with him. I see from the picture you have posted that sometime, over our years apart , he lost his thick curly black hair and massive beard. He always had a warm smile and kind manner as well as being phenomenally talented and an all round excellent student. He taught my " little brother", Howard Linscott how to play the double bass. Thanks for that Pete.

I´m so sorry that you have lost a wonderful husband, Dad and Grandpa. And I´m sorry that Pete and I haven´t seen each other for decades. I´ll cherish his memory and think of all of you in the sad days to come.

( happily retired high school teacher and Howard´s much older sister)

Peter was such a loved member of the orchestra, I doubt there was anyone who ever said an unkind word about him! I´m so sorry for your loss Mary Lou, and condolences to your family.
