Peter MAURICE Obituary

PETER CHARLES MAURICE July 12, 1937 - March 14, 2021 It is with a heavy heart that I regret to inform you that my father Peter Maurice, passed away at University Hospital in London. He was a remarkable man and a great father. When I was a young boy he was at every hockey game and practice which made me feel very important. Whenever I asked him for help with homework he was always there to teach me from first principles. (I just wanted the answer). As adults we grew to be best friends and talked daily about topics that would usually only interest us. As a man he lived a remarkable life. He grew up East of Adelaide on Quebec St. in a broken home. He met my mother when they were young, and was taken in by my Grandmother as a member of the McGrath family. My Grandmother created a home filled with love. That was all he needed to become the greatest man I have ever known. At 16 he worked on the railroad swinging hammers and shoveling coal into the steam engines. He became big and strong. He was a voracious reader and good at school and earned himself an academic scholarship to The University of Western Ontario as an engineer. He or my mom's family had no means so a scholarship was his only route to university. I followed in his footsteps as a graduate engineer from Western where he gave me my ring in the iron ring ceremony. He at 5' 10" made the Western Football team as a defensive end. After graduation he followed his feelings and ended up in banking. Although trained as an engineer by the time he turned 50 he had become President of Canada Trust (soon to be TD Canada Trust). Is that not a remarkable life! He was the smartest wisest person I ever knew! From his upbringing he was also very tough. I think the best advice he ever gave me was "You have everything you ever wanted in your life right now because if you had wanted more you would of put in the effort to get it". Looking at his life who could argue? I LOVE YOU DAD! Predeceased by his beloved wife Beverley Ann Maurice (McGrath). Lovingly remembered by his son Jonathan and wife Sarah Smith, grandson Zachary, and his sister Joanne Crichton. Visitation by appointment at Harris Funeral Home, London on Tuesday, March 23rd from 4-7 p.m.; RSVP to 519-433-7253. Private family service in the funeral home and interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, London. Memorial contributions to the Boys and Girls Club of London or the Humane Society would be appreciated.

Jonathan, I am sorry to hear about your dad.
I was thinking about our childhood days in London, and many memories of your family. My favourite story is the time your dad was in a CT branch as a robbery began. That bank robber had no idea what he was in for! Peter chased the thief down the street, tackled him and held him until police arrived. I am not certain how much of that is true, or what was mythologized by my childhood memory, but it sure makes a good story. Of course, police pointed out this is not a best practice if you witness a robbery...but it's the way I'll remember your dad.
Best wishes to you and your family.

I knew Peter for 70 years being Bev's best friend as youngsters living at 180. Great memories of many wonderful discussions with Peter every two or three weeks right up until his passing. He loved you Jon very much and was very proud of you.

Dear Jon
Barry and I were terribly saddened to learn of Pete’s passing last week. Although we had not seen your Dad for a number of years due to moving west we have always considered your Mom and Dad some of our closest friends. Our lives were meshed together as a result of living in London and then Toronto before we moved offshore. We have many wonderful memories of parties, dinners and paddle matches ,and sitting on the beach in Grand Bend . Also getting to know you and Gram enhanced that relationship.
Time and distance makes it difficult makes it difficult to maintain these valued relationships but your Mom and Dad’s passing so many years apart has not lessened our feelings of loss. We will remember their friendship and the happy times we spent with them forever.

Our love from us both
