Peter MIDDLETON Obituary

PETER DOUGLAS MIDDLETON June 27, 1944 - June 30, 2019 Peter died at home, as was his wish, at the age of 75, seven weeks after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He faced this news with incredible strength and dignity. Cared for and forever missed by his wife and best friend, Céline Messier, his beloved son, Josh Middleton and stepsons Vincent Deslauriers and Mathieu Deslauriers (Geneviève). Predeceased by his parents, John Douglas Middleton and Louise (Bowman) Middleton, Peter also leaves his sister, Mary Lynn O'Shea. After earning his M.A. in French Literature at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and spending two memorable years teaching in Paris, Peter returned to Toronto and devoted his considerable energies to Canada's emerging concern for the environment as one of the co-founders of Pollution Probe and its first Executive Director. From 1974 -1983, his innovative consulting firm, Middleton Associates, focused on exploring energy and environmental management alternatives. For the next 35 years, Peter worked with a variety of governmental, educational and private entities, to further his life's goal of creating better approaches to how we live within our environment. In his last role, as president of the EARTH Development Fund, his priority was a program to move commercial real estate towards zero carbon. Although clearly he had the ability to put together complex projects with forward-thinking goals, perhaps more importantly, Peter was a dreamer, artist and nature lover. His deep love of family and his sense of humour contributed to the courage with which he approached the end of his life. There will be no service at Peter's request. The family would appreciate any donations to the charity of your choice.

This gentleman was a pillar of my childhood and the greatest form of modesty. Power in a society reach a point where he showed we have more to share then to gain. He paved the way to the commercial audience of the environnement's worth making it all appealing for Canadian commercial application ( great lakes industrials. The novelty and might was all true to himself and no one stepped on more toes than him except his beloved wife, my grandmother. This photo represent the man as i see him, consequently happy for a reason to be proud to live, success is above dying, because we needed those guys to succeed where historically they left us with a hope to try and intervene. He reminds every one of us that we all bite more than we chew, let's talk about then where we have no time to loose, anxiety is a lack of this kind of prosperous passion where inspiration come from any kind of human behavior where we don't for take recognize significant actions.

Peter was at the vanguard of issues that are in the forefront today. He was a visionary with a sharp wit and an intelligent view of the universe. I feel fortunate to have a small part in his orbit.

How sad I felt this morning to receive the news of Peter's death last Sunday. It was forwarded by Ryan O'Connor, author of "The First Green Wave: Pollution Probe and the Origins of Environmental Activism in Ontario."

I worked at Pollution Probe for 3 years, 1971 to 1974, along with Peter, but did not get to know him very well, so turned to Ryan's book for a refresher. A long paragraph, 23 lines on page 63, describes Peter's background as of 1969.

Peter's five summers as a leader at Kilcoo Camp, where we held a three- or four-day retreat a few years later, reminded me of the major influence summer camps had on so many people growing up in Ontario, learning to love canoeing and nature, working as a team, enjoying campfires and singsongs, and developing leadership skills.

We have lost a fine man, husband and father.

He taught me , on a very fundamental level, how to love absolutely and to be loved. Memories of my childhood are filled with nothing but warmth and safety. Giving me everything that he did not have as a child would be an understatement. Compassion, empathy and the overall beauty of this life we share are but a few of the positive lenses through which I see the world. And I truly owe that all to him. He was my first friend and I am very much a product of his design. His spirit lives on in not only myself, but also in every step our society takes toward a greener and sustainable human existence on this earth. What a great man he was. Champion of our natural world.May your soul be at peace now.Love always,Your son

I knew Peter well in our last undergraduate year at Vic, through his Paris years (I still remember his vivid descriptions of the May 1968 events), and especially through his passionate commitment to Pollution Probe in its early years. As we can now realize, he was prescient in his concern for the environment. My deepest sympathy to his family on what I know will be a tragic loss of a man who still had so much to give.

Celine, Josh and Vincent, I'm very sorry for your loss. His drive and commitment made the world a better place, and he was a true gentleman. Unlike many of us, his legacy is significant. I know first-hand the hole in your hearts that can happen when you lose a loved one so quickly. you are in my thoughts and my heart.

I was shocked and saddened to hear this news. Peter was a visionary and his wisdom was apparent to all who knew him. I have many memories of our experiences together many years ago at Kilcoo Camp. My condolences to his family.

I am deeply saddened by Peter's passing, way too early with such a clear vision of what needed to be done and the indefatigable energy to continue pushing away at the gates of resistance. He was a good friend, colleague and mentor and most of all an example of a life lived for the common good. I miss him. We all are the poorer for his loss.
