Canadian journalist Peter Morton died suddenly - and, at 58, much too soon for his family and many friends - on Wednesday at his home in Bethesda, Maryland. A gifted reporter, Peter made his name in the United States and his native Canada covering trade, economic and political news. Born in Toronto, he began his long career while studying journalism at Ryerson University, where he edited the student newspaper. He went to work at several major Canadian newspapers: the Globe and Mail, the Calgary Herald and as the Financial Post's bureau chief in Washington for twelve years. Peter won many awards for his writing; his grasp of trade issues and speed on deadline were a wonder. Away from work, he loved getting on the green in two, a sunny day on the boat, summers at the cottage and, most of all, time with his family; his wife and high school sweetheart, Cathie; their daughters Jennifer (Harver Bautista), Leslie, Courtney and Audrey; and six grandchildren. Peter is predeceased by his parents, David Charles and Margaret (Peggy) Morton. He is survived by his four siblings: Nancy, David Richard (Dori), Janet (Frank) Van Daalen and Leah (Cam) MacArthur. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 10th at St. Dunstan's Church, 5450 Massachusetts Ave in Bethesda, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the animal rescue group of your choice. Peter would be especially pleased if any dachshunds benefit from your kindness.
