Peter NEWBERRY Obituary



NEWBERRY, Peter Daniel
Passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 1999, in his 76th year. Beloved husband of Jennifer Cox. Loving father of Dr. Douglas Newberry and his wife Irene England; Mary Newberry and Gus Sinclair; Soo Newberry; and Ann Newberry. Cherished grandfather of Siara; Dylan; Vanessa; and Dan. Will be greatly missed by his brothers Reenan Newberry, Robin Newberry and their children and Dr. Jo Vellacott. Peter was born in Pretoria, South Africa. From the age of 16 he served in the South African Air Force 1940-1945, taken POW 1944-1945. Peter took his medical degree in Johanesberg, South Africa and trained further in the UK. In 1956 he joined the Canadian Air Force where he served as flight surgeon and general physician. In 1964 he obtained his M.Sc. in Bio Physics and did research at the Institute of Aviation Medicine in Toronto, publishing his work in the Lancet. Upon retirement he worked on Mercury Toxicity with the First Nations people in Grassy Narrows. He then started a medical practice in Toronto, later moving to Belwood, Ontario. Peter's passion was helping people with great knowledge of both Conventional and ;Alternative medicine. His efforts to provide compassion as well as his ability to listen to his patients and defy the ;Establishment will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. Patients and friends travelled great distances to benefit from Peter's care. The family will receive friends at the THOMSONJEFFREY FUNERAL HOME, 160 St. David Street North (#6 Hwy.), FERGUS, (519) 843-2380, on Friday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Saturday at 3 p.m. Interment McKee Cemetery, Belwood to follow. Donations to the Canadian Friends (Quaker) Service Committee would be appreciated. There will be a Quaker Memorial Meeting on Monday, August 23, 1999 at 7:15 p.m. at the Yonge Street meeting house which is ½ mile south of Highway 9 on the West side of Yonge Street.
