Peter NICKELS Obituary

PETER DAVID NICKELS Peter died January 22, 2021 in Toronto at Princess Margaret Hospital after a sudden and short battle with Stage 4 gallbladder cancer. He was born January 26, 1954 in Montreal and raised in Montreal West by his parents Walter and Betty Nickels. He is survived by his children, Ashley, David, Brendan, and Deanna, his son-in-law Tyler, his daughter-in-law Katie, his grandchildren Emma, Maddy, Jake, Kayley, Charlie, and Brayson (and granddogs Bentley and Stella), his sister, Peggy, her husband, Patrick, and their three children, Michael, Erica, and Christopher. A sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 32 years, he developed hundreds of close relationships and helped countless people find sobriety and recovery. Peter wore many hats, spending decades as a salesman. He spearheaded many entrepreneurial endeavors, building clocks, repairing wooden furniture, investing in green energy, and trying to bring clean energy to the First Nations reserves. He enjoyed working with his hands and was happy spending a day constructing a bookshelf or digging a rose garden, typically accompanied by colourful and creative uses of profanity when things didn't go according to plan. Peter dedicated himself to a life of community service. He donated clothes, time, and energy to help those less fortunate. He helped build High Park Castle in Toronto, and often spent time there with his kids after it was built. Peter frequently assisted close friends and strangers alike who were struggling. He always had time to listen and share advice. Remarkably energetic, loudly opinionated, highly educated, well read, and always looking for a good verbal sparring, Peter surrounded himself with people who liked to discuss history, politics, sports, books, successes and tragedies, and life itself. He made friends for life, wherever he went; his address book was as packed with names as a telephone book. His exploits were many and we're still finding out about some! While not affiliated with any church or specific religion, Peter practiced Taoism and Buddhism for many years in an endless pursuit of understanding spirituality and the meaning of inner peace. One of the many lessons we can pull from Peter's life is the endless pursuit of knowledge and life itself, how to be courageous enough to have difficult conversations with ourselves and our loved ones so that no resentments linger, and to never, ever give up. Peter deeply loved his children and was delighted with his new grandchildren. He is already greatly missed by family and friends, and will always be remembered as a kind and loving person. At Peter's request, cremation has taken place. The family plans to celebrate his life when COVID restrictions are lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations to Toronto's Sick Kids Hospital or to the Four Villages Community Health Centre would be appreciated.

Peter is still remembered at the Toronto Over-50 Hockey League. He was the Green team's best player on the ice and in the change room (which is just as important in any game). Just last night his name came up yet again, which is why I thought I´d drop him another email to say hello and catch up. When the email bounced I checked and found he'd passed.

He was a special man. I´ll miss him. Next Monday I´ll mention his passing in the change room.

Peter and I would meet once a week for coffee, engaging in discussions of life, sports and religion. Met him at the gym & remained friends.

My condolences to Peggy and family and to Peter’s children. Although I had lost touch with Peter over the last many years, I have lots of fun memories from our days hanging out with our gang of friends in Montreal West. Peter was definitely a kind soul and was always ready to help others. He had a great smile and laugh that I can still picture today. Rest In Peace my old friend.

My condolences, Peter was tall in life and personality. He was a great sales mentor to me at out time with Mailing Innovations and Pitney Bowes. Gave the new kid a chance and showed me the ropes. I still employ the tactics he taught me on a daily basis. Some of the best times we had was in conversation to and from sales calls. He will be missed.

Peter, was an enthusiastic soul. We were first introduced while he was co-chair of the International Convention. And our paths crossed many times in service from that point. He was passionate about Corrections, Archives and helping others. He willed be missed by his friends and family. Very sad.

I knew Peter for over 20 years both from his days at Pitney Bowes and as members of the Bayview group of AA. Peter always stood out in a crowd and it wasn't always that he was the tallest of the group. He was never at a loss for words but it was his strength of character and caring for others that were his trademarks. Anyone who knew him certainly will never forget him.

I met Peter 18 years ago in a "church basement" and although I wouldn't have admitted it then, he scared me. Tall, imposing, opinionated, sometimes loud and raucous. I was ill equipped then to see Peter for Peter, the loving, passionate, deeply feeling, heart on his sleeve, toothy grinned Peter. Over the years as I grew, I began to see you for you...everywhere!! What a ride this thing has given us and now you have awoken to everlasting life, your earthly worries evaporated! Looking forward to when we meet again Peter, in the Fellowship of the Spirit.

I was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of a good Friend & member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I always admired his zest for life, his positive attitude and his eagerness to help others. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Peter and I am so grateful to have got to know you, even if it was for a short while.

Peter, you will be sorely missed. I have enjoyed the many conversations we have had. Thank you for always asking about my own children. I will miss including you with our nearly weekly Saturday sushi nights when we could both make it there.
To your large family and the grand-dogs LOL, I am very sorry for your loss. Please know that you all are in my thoughts.

Peter showed his true nature early in life. The description of the path he found in adulthood could have been predicted by the character of the child l knew in elemntary school. He was a truely good person, then, and, l find now, throughout his life. Peter so obviously had such a positive impact on so many. What a loss, what a legacy.

Man...I did not think we would have to say goodbye so soon. :(

Peter was a complete person. He had his struggles as we all do but he was a very kind hearted man. He was a very good friend to me and many others. I know he was always there for me in times when I needed help and guidance. I have come to learn one of the most generous things someone can do in this live is give freely of their time. And Peter did that in spaded.

He was a wonderful member of the fellowship. I will miss him with all my heart. Love ya Pete.

"My god grant you rest, you faithful servant. Let His perpetual light shine upon you" Amen.
