Peter SCOTT Obituary

PETER DAVID SCOTT

Peter Scott died on Sunday, March 12, 2017 in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island at the age of 92. He was the husband of the late Barbara Scott (separated), father of Tim and Larry (deceased), father-in-law of Victoria Gregory, grandfather of Geoffrey and uncle to several nieces and nephews.
Peter was born in Toronto on November 24, 1924, to Lillian and William Scott. He was predeceased by his brother John and sisters Carol and Joyce. He attended Upper Canada College before joining the Royal Canadian Navy to serve in WWII. Peter attended U of T before leaving to pursue a number jobs. In 1960 he settled on teaching which became his vocation.
Summer camps, an early family cottage and his father's hunting camp in Quebec imbued a love of nature and the outdoors. In the late '40's Peter and a group of friends pooled their money to buy an island on Raven Lake. 'L'Esprit' became a beloved destination, remaining in Peter's family to this day. In the early '60's Peter and Barbara took their young family to the far north to be the first school teachers in Canada's northern most community of Grise Fiord on the south shore of Ellesmere Island. The two years in Grise Fiord provided a life time of memories, respect for the indigenous sense of community and a profound sense of the scale and identity of Canada.
Returning to Ontario the Scott family settled in Gravenhurst where Peter taught at a number of schools throughout Muskoka, specializing in Mathematics and outdoor education. Peter's conviction that his students needed to get out of the classroom challenged the conventions of the day but endeared him to his students particularly those who otherwise felt marginalized by school.
Taking an early retirement, Peter and Barbara moved to Vancouver Island settling in Lantzville. Peter continued to teach as a volunteer, enjoying the weather and exploring the vast outdoors. He committed himself to managing his adult onset diabetes with diet and exercise and was able to live an independent life until 89 when he required full-time support and moved to Trillium Lodge in Parksville.
Even though Peter found the loss of his independence difficult, his strong spirit and interest in the world (as he saw it) made him a character and a voice in every community he was part of, including his last at Trillium Lodge. We're sure all the dogs that Peter knew and loved were waiting for him on the other side, making a glorious racket in greeting.
