PETER SEABROOK Obituary

(November 21, 1958 - September 19, 2025) Peter Cameron Seabrook, on September 19, 2025, in his 66th year. Predeceased by father, Victor Melville Seabrook; and mother, Isobel Ruth Seabrook of Toronto. Survived by brother, Richard and his wife, Susan, of Kensington, Maryland, USA; his nephews and nieces, Malcolm, Helena, Ian and Trevor of Phoenix, USA; and his brother, Timothy Victor Seabrook of Toronto. Peter was an original, and in spite of attending Upper Canada College (class of '77), his love of music was fostered as a soloist in the choir at Grace Church on the Hill and by spending countless hours drumming in the basement of the Seabrook family home echoing in tony Forest Hill, while blaring music from the Panasonic stereo to the tunes of Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Three Dog Night to name a few bands of that era. Peter was also a gifted student who excelled in history and was offered scholarships to study at many universities in Canada but chose to study Political Science at McGill University in Montreal where he graduated in 1981. It was at McGill where he met the lead singer, Ivan Doroschuk, of Men Without Hats, and together they formed a close bond, spending many hours "jamming" instead of attending lectures. Peter loved the club circuit of Montreal of the '80s and everything that came with it. However, instead of pursuing a career in music, he chose to pursue a career in law and attended Osgoode Hall, much to the approval of his father who was a Bay Street barrister. Unfortunately, his brilliant mind for law (and many other things) was cut short and corrupted by the cruel illness of schizophrenia and the trajectory of his life was changed forever. Luckily, Peter had a family that stood by and supported him through the ups and downs of his illness. His father, Victor, was devoted to him, and they spent many hours together discussing the Toronto Maple Leafs or US politics and the Denver Broncos when the family moved to Denver. His mother, Bette, was his constant nurturer and always encouraged him to express his unique style in fashion. Richard remained in contact with him from afar, where they often discussed their eclectic taste in music. Lastly, it was his "little brother" Tim, who constantly remained by his side as his fierce advocate when his needs became more complex and his housing and care vulnerable. Peter's life was not an easy one, but he lived it on his own terms (as much as he could) with his sharp intelligence, wit, and irreverent panache shining through. Peter liked to push buttons (in more ways than one!) as a provocateur, but he always maintained he was a "lover, and not a fighter." Maybe that's why he was taken from us too soon – he had been fighting the fight for so long, that his heart couldn't take it anymore. Rest in peace, Peter. Your fight is over. A visitation will occur on Wednesday, September 24th, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Funeral Center (375 Mount Pleasant Rd., Toronto), followed by a private funeral. In lieu of flowers, and if you wish, please donate to CAMH and/or Kensington Gardens.
