My condolences to Geri and Peter's family in facing this difficult time. What a life Peter lived and such a huge impact on many other lives.

For Peter Steven.
Its been a tough year for losing political comrades of influence and
inspiration. Two who struck me particularly hard were Toni Negri and
David Greaber. Both iconoclasts with a healthy left libertarian streak
and lively imaginations. But much more personally and closer to home
was Peter Steven who died just before Christmas after a long and
difficult fight with cancer. I worked for many years with Peter at
Development Education Centre, Full Frame Film and Video and
Between The Lines Publishers. He was always a rock helping keep
these organizations on the rails by combining common sense with
political principle and with his willingness to do whatever it took from
writing grant proposals to taking out the garbage. Oddly he and I never
became close friends until after our joint work experience. Peter
always had an eye on expanding the often-too-narrow choir (as in
preaching to the choir) that made up the Left's base. As such he
appreciated New Internationalist the magazine I helped edit for many
years for its commitment (not always successful) to a form of popular
Left journalism. Pete took the initial initiative in our friendship
drawing me into writing projects coming from his job at Sheridan
College. This all culminated in a research project into the life and
times of our mutual friend Errol Sharpe - an intellectual and
entrepreneurial pioneer of English Canadian radical publishing.
Despite Pete's illness he kept at it and he and I would meet for lunch at
Mother's Dumplings on Spadina when I was in town to mull over the
project and the fate of our sad and beautiful world.
Unlike too many on the Left, Peter was not full of himself glorifying
in the correctness of his own views. He was thoughtful to the last - a
listener as well as a talker. He had a fine understated sense of humour.
A ready grin. Not that he couldn't stand his ground. He could and he
did. He was fascinated with human communication (both film and
writing) and how it could be bent to the service of liberation. He wrote
and helped publish books, distributed films, taught, published articles,
raised funds, helped maintain a vital network of alternative
organizations, got involved in local causes in Parkdale - the Toronto
community that he and his lifelong partner Geri called home. It was a
full and worthy life of which those who had the good fortune of
knowing him will miss greatly. He was the best that can be said about
any of us - good company. A life well lived.
Happy Trails Pete

Pete was a senior counsellor at Camp Ponacka when I joined the staff as a junior counselor. Pete was very kind and taught me a lot about how to be responsible for others and how to have a lot of fun at the same time. His kind smile and sense of humour were an inspiration to all of us. I always enjoyed seeing him at the various camp reunions. Will miss him. Chris Lobb.

From the back of the boat or over a beer the conversation flowed and just seemed like one long discussion. He always agreed with me, or maybe it was it I who agreed with him, didn´t matter much, we couldn´t seem to find all the answers. Film, politics, sailing and good company...will miss you Peter

Pete was a kind, generous and joyful friend and a wonderful and loving partner to Geri. A scholar and natural educator, he advocated for peaceful dialogue, equity and human rights, and opposed injustices to all peoples. We will miss his quiet humour and fellowship. In solidarity, we say "PETE STEVENS, PRESENTE!!"
We send our condolences to Geri, and to the Sadoway and Steven family, as they grieve.

Peter was a great guy and a good friend. His intellect and his knowledge of culture and politics meant he was a fascinating person to spend time with. As a writer and an educator his knowledge of film and video was all encompassing. He will be much missed by his numerous old friends at DEC and DEC films and the various social and political communities he continued to work with over the years. A great loss.

I have many fond memories of Pete at Camp Ponacka in the 1960´s. Gave me my first sailing lesson in 1966 (we tipped) and I have enjoyed sailing ever since.
Great guy who will be missed.
Condolences to his partner and family.

Peter was a beloved son-in-law. Always quiet and unassuming but very loving and loved in our family. I was impressed by his intelligence and knowledge. We had discussions in which he always had well thought answers to my questions. I felt very happy to receive photos and write-ups about his and Geri´s travels together and enjoyed visits to their home in Toronto. We will be grieving for a long while. Miss you Pete.

Pete was such an accomplished person, but in my time with him did not portray ego to trumpet those accomplishments. He was gracious, generous and lived with grace. He led a life which we all should try to emulate.
Pete, your pain is gone, and you will be remembered. Rest.
