PETER HARRIS SUTHERLAND

PETER HARRIS SUTHERLAND obituary

PETER SUTHERLAND Obituary

With deep love and gratitude, we share that Peter Harris Sutherland, 72, died on January 18, 2026. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Francesca Scalzo; and his parents, Robert A.F. and (Caroline) Jane Sutherland. He is survived by siblings, David, Kate, and Stephen; and by nephews and niece, Sam, Ben, and Emma (Renaerts), all of whom will miss his sharp wit, generous spirit, and unmistakably independent way of doing things. Based in Toronto, Peter built a remarkable career as a prop-maker for advertising, film, and photography. Known for creating "real-but-perfect" props and ingenious rigs, he brought ingenuity, whimsey, precision, and craft to every project. His training reflected wide curiosity and artistic range, from OCAD and the École des Beaux-Arts in Montréal to an apprenticeship with sculptor William McElcheran, and later work as a mould-maker and architectural model-maker. Though he witnessed photography's shift from film to digital, Peter remained devoted to traditional craft, guided by the motto: "You can lie … but you can't cheat." Family, friends and colleagues knew Peter for his humor, originality, and talent for solving problems in unexpected ways. His emails and notes were legendary - full of insight, wordplay, and "ritual flourish" that made every message unmistakably his. Peter was a gifted artist, a kind man, and a wonderful uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed. A Celebration of Life will be held in Toronto and online in March.
