Peter THOMSON Obituary

April 13, 1930 - August 28, 2024 Peter Thomson, who died peacefully at his home in Vancouver, at the age of 94, was a man of remarkable optimism, kindness, and good humour. His life began on the Manitoba farm homesteaded by his grandfather in 1879. Early experiences with farm work and sports instilled in him the value of doing his best in every endeavour. His horizons expanded at Carleton University, from which he graduated in 1954. He then started a career as a journalist that, in time, took him all over the world meeting with world leaders and other interesting people. As the Ottawa bureau chief for two major newspapers, he developed friendships with MPs from all parties and eventually worked as an aide to cabinet ministers of two different political stripes. His final career move was to Winnipeg as the head of the Grain Transportation Authority. A retirement of almost 30 years allowed new enthusiasms to flourish. He reignited his talent for baseball by playing and coaching with pennant winning old-timer teams. He won many trophies playing snooker, he golfed, cut his lawn with a push mower, and supplied the neighbourhood with produce from his large garden. He was proud to be inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. Peter's gregarious nature inspired great friendships. He loved getting together with his buddies at the Manitoba Club and the Mousetrap Club. Good friends gathered regularly on the porch at his home in Winnipeg to discuss issues of the day. Peter is survived by his wife, Pat, his true partner for over 60 years; by his dearly loved sons, Peter (Denise) and Rob; and by his beloved granddaughters, Sarah and Emily. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Conrad Heidenreich; and nephews, Con (Sarah, Will and Fiona) and Robert Heidenreich; nephews, Rae and Craig Thomson, and their families. Predeceased by his parents, Annie and Ray Thomson; brothers, Dr. Jack Thomson (Myrtle), Bruce and Bob; and by his sister-in-law, Nancy Heidenreich. The family wants to thank the outstanding medical staff of Three Bridges Community Health for their attentive care of Peter in his final days. We are also so appreciative of all the thoughtful notes we've received from family and friends. There will not be a formal service, but gatherings are being planned in Winnipeg and Vancouver. Private family burial in the family plot at Miami, Manitoba. Donations in memory of Peter can be made to Canadian Blood Services, Canadian Red Cross, or Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame.
