I hadn't seen 'Phil' since the late seventies when I also emigrated from England to Canada to pursue my career. In the late sixties, he and I were both active members of the National Union of Journalists. Working for one of the Thomson Organisation's outposts behind the Times of London on Grays Inn road. When I arrived in Canada, shortly behind Phil, I looked him up and, as you all would expect, he have me helpful, witty and gritty advice about how to deal with this, to us, strange culture. I'm sorry we didn't stay in touch, but from the celebration of life service I watched, it looks like he was surrounded by wonderful people. To Philip's family and friends, please accept my condolences on your loss. Sincerely, Richard Willingham, Toronto

Phil set the standard for cheerfulness and good humour in a newsroom predisposed to be a bit too serious and self-important. His greatness as an editor was based as much on his easy rapport with sometimes difficult people as his sensitive and efficient critical judgments. We shared an appreciation for the absurdities of everyday life, though coming from Phil, with his London Archway background, the wry commentary always seemed more delightfully Pythonesque. I'll miss his Monday-morning reports on the achievements of his golf fantasy team ("Dottie did me proud!"), and the treasure-trove of British tabloids that he'd haul in to the newsroom after a trip back home -- a reminder not to take our shared profession quite so seriously.
