Philip WEINSTEIN Obituary

PHILIP ZAVEL WEINSTEIN March 15, 1933 - September 23, 2022 Lived a long, happy life. He was lucky to find the love of his life, Diana, when she was 17 at U of T, on an anthropology dig. They spent the next 71 years together. They called each other FACE (origin unknown). Philip found a deeply meaningful career in Urban Planning, which he loved. His work lives on in many places, including the Metro Toronto Zoo, Centreville on the Toronto Islands and Bramalea. His work is also in Texas, California, China and Russia. And includes some famous highway guardrails in London, England. Endlessly loved by his three children, Johanna, Julia and Matthew; son-in-law, Nicholas Fasullo; and daughter-in-law, Adriana Urtasun; brother, Alan; and sister-in -law, Nina. He adored his grandchildren, Thea and Ben; and 12 hairy dogs. Philip was a lover of the arts, especially opera and ballet. He was a fabulous dancer and never afraid to eat more meals in great restaurants than at home. Philip has been lucky to have lifelong friendships. He loved making his model planes with Jerry Markson and going on a yearly upstate New York road trip. These two would meticulously build model planes that once launched, would simply fly away. It was beautiful. Philip was lucky to travel extensively with the family and with Diana. Especially through France, with boundless love. He studied French with passion, and his French classes and classmates were precious to him. The family home was a gathering spot for their friends and their children's friends. They were always up for a good giggle. Philip was handsome, charming, clever and funny, which is always the best combination. His happiest time was with his beloved Di at their country home in Rosemont, Ontario. We always joked with him about putting "Hard, soft, round. Don't pack air" on his tombstone, if he had one. That's how he would request items when packing up the car for the weekend. "If there ever comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart. I'll stay there forever." I was so lucky to know Philip as a business partner and friend. We travelled together to China, Russia, Dallas and other places and he was alway a delight to be with. It was never work when he was involved. I will miss his presence greatly.

Philip was a mentor and a dear friend. His passion for city building and life in general was infectious and made work and travel always interesting and fun.... it is this very same curiosity and joie de vivre what made Philip one of the most formidable master planner designers to work with.

Will treasure our time together for the rest of my life...
My deepest condolences to Diana, Johanna, Matt and family.

A life well lived. Miss our visits, conversations, jokes and tears with the dogs over many many years or should I say decades. My sincerest condolences. Philip will be missed, always remembered and treasured.

Philip was one of my heroes.

He always lit up the room, balancing the perfect combination of brilliance and the ridiculous. Seeing him always cheered me up and our conversations were always challenging. Please include me in the long list of friends that will miss him.

Philip Weinstein was a remarkable man.He is remembered fondly as much for the joy that he found in life as for his extensive professional planning achievements. He possessed a sharp intellect, a distinct sense of humour and an enduring personality.Philip's love of life and exceptional, exacting professional career were closely intertwined with a long, well travelled, personal journey with friends family and dogs. All who knew Philip will miss him, and they will not forget him.

Philip would regale me with stories about living in London and having Jimmy Logan, Scottish comedian as a neighbour. This would take me back to my childhood when my family would make the annual Christmas trip to the Glasgow Alhambra Theatre to take part in the wonderful pantomimes where Jimmy would always be the star. Philip was a most unusual and entertaining neighbour and he will be missed. He always talked most glowingly about his wonderful wife. Diana.

News of Phillip's passing this morning left me sitting and reflecting on this lovely man. We were primarily colleagues but one always felt Phillip was also your friend. Charming, funny, smart with a million great stories and anecdotes. I will miss his presence greatly. Rest in peace dear friend.

Rest in peace, dear friend. The years of happy memories will always be with me and, I hope, with Diana. So many concerts, recitals, operas, plays, ballets, as well as travels to take in those events, especially when the four of us were together. My sincerest condolences to Diana, Johanna, Matt and family. Warren
