PHYLLIS ANNE FISHER
March 25, 1931 - February 20, 2015 Phyl led her life of almost 84 years on her own terms and died on Friday, February 20, 2015 the same way, independent to the last. A Registered Nurse with a proud history of public health service in Toronto over four decades, she came out of Val D'Or, a gold mining town in northern Quebec where her father was the town doctor. She moved to Toronto after training as a nurse in Sherbrooke and became a big city girl, living well south of Bloor Street most of her adult life. She grudgingly moved three blocks north of Bloor to Fellowship Towers in 2009, taking solace from the fact that she was now living on Yonge Street instead of a block east. She loved classical music, reading and the CBC. Never married, Phyllis watched over her bedridden mother for 30 years until her death in 1985. While she had no children of her own, she became a den mother to her extended family, the children and grandchildren of her three siblings, Doug, Marilyn and Chuck, who was one of her greatest inspirations and always available for support. Phyllis was a true force of nature. She could be strong-willed and testy, but she was also capable of great love for those who loved her. We will miss her terribly - her passing last week leaves a void in our lives and our hearts. We are grateful to the staff at Fellowship Towers (now Davenhill Senior Living) for their care of Phyl during her six years there, particularly Head Nurse Ofelia and her team. Phyl would have appreciated donations being made in her name to Doctors Without Borders or the Salvation Army. A memorial service is being arranged for a later date to accommodate out-of-town relations. Please contact the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue for details.
