PHYLLIS KYER Obituary
Passed away unexpectedly with her husband of 52 years, C. Ian Kyer, by her side on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the age of 76. Daughter of David and Ruth Shopiro, she was born May 3, 1949, in Geraldton, Ontario. Phyllis, however, thought of Owen Sound as her childhood home. Her parents moved there shortly after her birth and stayed until 1959 when they moved to North York. She loved to tell of how as a young girl she walked to school in the winter when the Owen Sound snowbanks towered over her. She excelled at school, winning prizes. While attending Northview Heights, she worked at the North York public library as a page and then at the municipal pool as a cashier. She received an arts BA in French and German from York University. She ended up at the Canada Revenue Agency, Excise Tax administration, where she became a rulings office. She met her husband on a blind date arranged by their mutual friend, Fred Tierney. They were married at Toronto City Hall on August 3, 1973. She leaves behind her husband; her brother, Murray Shopiro; nieces and nephews. A visitation will take place at the Highland Funeral Home – Scarborough Chapel (3280 Sheppard Ave. E.) on Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Patricia McAuliffe Educational Organization (Learning for Living).
