Rajiv MANUCHA Obituary

RAJIV MANUCHA June 28, 1953 - October 27, 2018 A humble man from 'the Indo-Gangetic Plain,' Rajiv moved to Toronto at 17 years of age, and in five years earned both his B.Eng. (7T5) and M.B.A ('76) from University of Toronto, where he found lifelong companions. After a few short years at IBM, he realized his dream of becoming an entrepreneur and created his first-born: MSR Inc. It has since grown into something he could never have imagined while toiling in his house on Northumberland St. He was passionate about his work and took joy in the innumerable bonds he formed with colleagues and erstwhile competitors. Despite his profound professional success, what mattered most to him were his friendships and family. Rajiv met his wonderful wife, Laurie, in 1993, with whom he raised four smart, thoughtful, well-rounded young men. He also enjoyed his extended family, and shared warm relationships with his friends. He was a sage to all, and many sought him out for advice, solace and opinion. Rajiv was a rarity: larger than life, a polymath, a risk taker, an excellent businessman, father, husband and friend. He was equally at home quoting Santayana and Shakespeare, practicing his formidable wordsmithing skills, listening to jazz, mentoring and coaching his people, and hosting fireside chats. Rajiv held the bar high, but the bar was respected and appreciated. His passions were far-ranging: he enjoyed tennis with his 'boys' at the Toronto Cricket Club, sitting by the water at the cottage, collecting ducks for his mantle, adventuring with his family, and making the most of Canadian winters. He was always searching for a novel experience. Rajiv is survived by his wife, Laurie, and sons, Ryan, Lucas, Bradley, and Sean. He also leaves behind his brother, Dilip; sister-in-law, Shalini; and their children, Sachin and Trisha. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Radha and Raj. Rajiv cherished the memories and love shared by family and friends who visited over the last several months. His life ended far too soon, but he lived it well and with vigour. His Memorial Service is to be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 2 p.m. Donations may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society or Ducks Unlimited Canada.

I am very, very sad to learn of Rajiv's death. While it is difficult to add much to the obituary in the Globe, and the photo with the obituary in The Star shows something of his sweet and benevolent nature, I would just like to add a brief note. I met Rajiv some 14 years ago when our respective sons were starting SK at UCC, and I took an instant liking to him. During those many years through to graduation last year, he remained my favorite of all the UCC fathers. Highly intelligent and accomplished, yet modest and humble in the extreme, Rajiv was, quite simply, one of the most beautiful people whom I have had the privilege to know in my seven decades of life.
He possessed essentially all the characteristics of someone whom we would all admire, the very epitome of a mensch. It is my misfortune that until I recently retired, and Rajiv became ill, we were too busy with our respective occupations, not to mention families, to see each other as often as I would have wanted. In spite of the relative paucity of contact, it was always a great pleasure to see him, and I was privileged to have called Rajiv a friend.
In addition to his marvellous and devoted Laurie, he leaves a legacy of four wonderful sons who could surely not do better than to emulate their father. Not only in his material accomplishments but more significantly in his exceptional family, Rajiv could not have been more proud. My heart, and those of my wife and children, all of whom shared in the honour of knowing him, go out to the Manucha family in their irreplaceable loss.

Rajiv was one of the most impressive people I've had the pleasure of knowing- as wise as he was generous, as understanding as he was charitable. He welcomed all of us neighbours like we were his own children, from swimming in the pool to daily hockey games in the driveway, he was an excellent role model to all who knew him.

My condolences to your entire family on this truly tragic loss, and may you all find happiness in the wonderful legacy he left behind.

Thank you for this worthy notice, in earnest sympathy for the loss to Laurie and his sons, and with deep gratitude for the enormous, kind influence Raj had in my life. A giant, with a giant heart.
