Ray ARGYLE Obituary

RAY ARGYLE After a lifetime of creativity, love, and achievement, Ray Argyle died in Cobourg, Ontario, on June 22, 2022 at the age of 92. He will be sadly missed by his children, grandchildren, and partner, Deborah Windsor. Ray believed in tackling big projects and reinvented himself as a journalist, a public affairs advisor, and an author. His journey began in 1929 in Winnipeg, MB, the youngest of four sons of Percy and Kate Argyle. After his mother's death and his father's remarriage, Ray left school to find work in journalism. Ray was committed to his family and was a friend and mentor to his employees and associates in business, the arts, and politics. He enjoyed his Muskoka cottage and gained pleasure from time spent with his family, and since 2000, with Deborah. At the age of 20, Ray became editor of a chain of 35 weekly papers in Alberta. Following that, he joined the British United Press news agency (now UPI) and worked for the old Toronto Telegram. He formed his own consulting firm, Argyle Communications Inc. in 1979. Ray wrote ten books published by leading Canadian and U.S. publishers. Much of his writing reflected his humanist views. He served as a trustee with the Scarborough Board of Education and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal for his "contributions to Canada." Even with his many professional achievements, it was the personal ones that were Ray's greatest source of pride. When each of his grandchildren were born, he put aside education savings so they could pursue post-secondary studies free from debt. In 2016, Ray was instrumental in bringing a Syrian writer refugee and his family to Canada. Most recently, Ray was supporting a Kingston, ON-based Ukrainian refugee organization. As Ray wrote in his final week, "The way I look at it, a year or two added to an active 92-year life doesn't really make that much difference. I'm a winner. A guy who started out with nothing and ended up with everything." Ray was married to the late Marie Holowack and is survived by three daughters, Sharon (David Norman), Brenda (Steve Penna) and Roanne (Wayne Watson); four grandchildren, Christopher, Logan, Sarah, and Jenna; and partner, Deborah.

My beloved uncle Ray was deeply affected by the loss of his mother when he was 11 years old. She taught her sons the proper use of the English language, and authored an unpublished novel. Ray got published, and he self-published a memoir, "The Time of My Life", and a semi-fictionalized Argyle family history, "Lives of My Fathers". I treasure those books for illuminating part of my family history, and I'm forever grateful for Ray's friendship.

As an advocate for freedom of expression, a writer and journalist, and a humanitarian to the core, my father Ray Argyle would have been honoured to know that his life continues to have an impact for communicators across the globe. We invite anyone who wishes, to make a contribution in Ray's memory to PEN Canada - an organization that celebrates literature, defends freedom of expression, and aids writers in peril. We request that any contribution is made as a "general donation" and that folks note on the donation, "in loving memory of Ray Argyle". Thank you for your generosity. https://pencanada.ca/

I feel so grateful to have known Ray for many years, since he got together with Deb. He was a remarkable person - immensely curious about the world around him, creative in his writing pursuits, free thinking and knowledgeable. He was an independent spirit, compassionate, kind and well-respected. We will miss him.

Ray was a force for good in the world. Generous of spirit and always willing to listen and learn, Ray was blessed with innate wisdom.

He will be missed by all those who had the good fortune to be within his orbit.

We met Ray when we joined the writers' refugee committee in Kingston. Ray initiated and was instrumental in bringing a Syrian family to Kingston. It's hard not to admire such an accomplished man, who was self-made in all respects. Ray was also very kind, gentle, and had a great sense of humor, supporting those around him. Ray, you will be missed.

I am really crushed to hear this. Ray may have been 92 but he didn´t seem 92. He always maintained a curiosity and zest for life. I worked with him and he was a true pro in every way. His writing and publishing over the last 20 years were inspiring to me and I will miss him. Condolences to Deborah and the family.
