RAYMOND LAFLAMME Obituary

1960 - 2025

Raymond Laflamme, beloved husband, father, friend, and pioneering quantum physicist, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Janice Gregson, and children, Patrick (Jenny) and Jocelyne (Cameron).

Born in Quebec City, Ray's brilliance and curiosity led him from a joyful childhood to a PhD under Stephen Hawking, and a groundbreaking career in quantum physics. He was founding director of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo and a Member of the Order of Canada. To his students and colleagues, he was an inspiring mentor and kind friend.

Ray loved the outdoors, storytelling, and most of all, his family. His legacy lives on in science and in the lives he touched.

The family thanks Dr. Valdez, Dr. Leighl, and the team at Princess Margaret Hospital for their extraordinary care, giving us eight more wonderful years with Ray. And thank you to Dr. Leonard, Dr. DiNicolo, the Oncology team, and the rehab team at WHRN for their compassionate care over the last few months.

It is a great privilege to remember Raymond LaFlamme as a truly fine scientist, engaging teacher, thoughtful leader, energetic builder of facilities and brilliant creator of possibilities for colleagues and students at Waterloo and around the world. Raymond was always prepared to engage not only in creating strategies but in implementing them and seeing them through. He respected leaders of industry and the community who came together to support his work. He was a generous colleague and always prepared to assist when called upon. He will be remembered with great admiration not only for all he accomplished at Perimeter and Waterloo but for the future discoveries his dedication will continue to enable. I thank him for his commitment to excellence, physics, his colleagues, students, his many supporters and to the world ...the world of science and discovery. We were privileged to say we knew him and be invited to dinner at his house. What a great chef he was too!... lamb as I recall. Ray and Janice were the ultimate hosts. So sorry to lose such as wonderful person.
