Reid passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025, after a long illness. He died at home, just as he wished. He is survived by Annabel, his wife of 60 years; his daughter, Heather (Knut Olav); son, Alasdair (Linda); and four remarkable grandchildren. He was born in West Kirby, Cheshire, England, in 1936. His mother died when he was three years old, and his father, R.D., married Muriel Fraser shortly afterwards. He earned an MA in Chemistry from Balliol College, Oxford, in 1960, followed by a D. Phil in 1962. On graduation, he became a research associate at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, after which he took a position as Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus, which later became the University of Regina. He held many positions throughout his 36-year career at the University, from Dean of Arts and Science to Executive Assistant to the Principal to Associate Vice-President (Academic). He believed passionately that the mission of the university was education, not job-training. Although his qualifications were in science, he always read widely and maintained a lively interest in current affairs right up to the day of his death. He served on many boards, including Vice-Chair for the South Saskatchewan Health Board, becoming Chair of the Finance Committee for many years, and Luther College High School. He also served as Chair of the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee. He loved growing flowers. He loved classical music and sang for many years in the Regina Philharmonic Choir. Most importantly, he was a committed Christian and faithful member of First Baptist Church, attending worship every Sunday and singing in the choir for over 50 years. A Memorial Service will be held in First Baptist Church, 2241 Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK, on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. To leave an online message of condolence or to view a livestream of the service, please visit
