Rhys EYTON Obituary

RHYS TUDOR EYTON September 23, 1935 - January 19 2023 Surrounded by love, Rhys Eyton passed away on Thursday, January 19, with his loving wife by his side. True to his nature, he took flight with the very grace he lived his life with. He will be lovingly remember by his wife Lynn Eyton; his children, Kate Levy (Arnon and family), Nevah Eyton (Meg and family); predeceased by his children, Russell Eyton (2021) and Jennifer Eyton (1981). Rhys touched many lives, and we know he will be missed by many far and wide. Rhys was widely recognized for his vision, decency and leadership during a transformative era in the airline industry. His introduction into the airline industry was in 1967 when he left his chartered accountant's position in a private practice to join Pacific Western Airlines. The challenge appealed to Rhys who was looking for something more entrepreneurial than his accounting practice. Rhys was a true pioneer in reshaping the commercial aviation sector - any future analysis of the history of Aviation will include his decades of significant contribution. His integrity, capacity to listen, and interpersonal skills - always lead the way. For his outstanding contributions - Rhys received many awards most notably: Canadian Business Leader of the Year University of Alberta (1988), Life Time Achievement Award (1992), Entrepreneur of the Year (1989), Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law University of Victoria (1990), Award for Excellence in International Business University of Calgary (1994), and most recently Inducted into The Aviation Hall of Fame 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in support of the Rhys Eyton Memorial HBA Award at Ivey Business School. There are many ways to give: by mail (1255 Western Road London, Ontario, Canada N6G 0N1) or by contacting Kristen McComb at 519-661-4161 or [email protected], or online at www.westernconnect.ca/eyton. Supporting the next generation of leaders was close to Rhys' heart.

Rhys Eyton was our much admired cousin. He really was more of a big brother to us and we quietly tried our best to emulate his many qualities -- kindness and empathy, patience and understanding, decisiveness based on a thorough analysis of facts, but most of all because of his enduring love and support of family and friends. His courageous battle with Alzheimer disease robbed him of precious memories, but he remained a gentleman to the very end, and always had a ready smile for everyone he met. In short he was an exceptional person who was a role model for everyone in his family, or for anyone one who had ever worked for him or did business with him. He made us all better for knowing him, and he made the world a better place. RIP dear cousin Rhys. June and Tony Eyton

Rhys and Lynn were neighbours and friends of our family for many years. We were certainly aware of Rhys' notable professional accomplishments but knew and loved him more for his humility, warmth, and grace. He was a gentle man and his wife Lynn cared for him with deep love and devotion over his challenging last years. RIP Rhys. The extended Trottier family.
