RICHARD BETHUNE Obituary

Dr. Richard Daughrey Bethune, MD, FRCP, a longtime family physician in Ancaster (1960-1995), Richard Bethune grew up in Hamilton and attended Westdale Secondary School. Rich was the loving husband of the love of his life, Margaret Lang (d. 2001); and proud father of Paul (d. 2003), David and Judy. He was exceptionally fond of his daughters-in-law, Carol (Regan) and Ursula (Schmidt); thought his grandchildren were amazing: Sarah, Scott, William and Eliza; and adored his great-granddaughter, Ada. In time, Rich met Judith McCulloch, widow of the late Dr. Peter McCulloch. When they married in 2005, Rich inherited another family: Peter and Christine, Paul and Melanie, Colin and Maria; and grandsons, Ian and Michael. Rich was predeceased by his parents, Alan and Heather Bethune; and by his brothers, Kenneth and Robert. Rich spent his last year at Shalom Village being lovingly cared for by the dedicated staff, and passed peacefully there surrounded by family. Visitation at Marlatt Funeral Home, Swackhamer Chapel, 195 King St. W., Dundas (905-627-4752), on Monday, June 16th, from 4 to 8 p.m. Private family Celebration of Life by invitation at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Shalom Village or Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.

Uncle Rich was a wonderful uncle to our family.
He was the personification of a life fully lived with his dedication to his profession, love for his family, and integrity in everything he did.
Bethune lore includes ancient stories from the "olden days" when three brothers dug trenches in the backyard to play "war", and in further feats of derring-do tobogganed down the Queen St hill in the winter.
The three families vacationed together for a number of years at a resort on Lake Muskoka called
"The Elms" before the purchase of the property on Muldrew Lake. Youngsters of all ages swam, learned to waterski, and the two youngest Judy and Kathy became proficient in jumping off the raft into the water submerging themselves.
We loved him and he will be sorely missed by our entire family.

Richard Bethune will be remembered dearly as an amazing person with tremendous energy, dedication and purpose. Earned his way with toughness and grit through college and university on athletic scholarships. Practiced medicine in Hamilton and Ancaster over the long span of his career. He had a powerful and positive influence over the medical community that extended beyond his practice, always upholding the highest standards that could be achieved. He contributed, yet staying with humility out of the limelight, to the founding and development of the now world-famous McMaster Medical Health center, and was a close colleague of the inaugural deans, Dr. John Evans and Dr. Fraser Musturd. He and his two brothers, Ken and Robby, were always there for each other in good times and tough times, and that unique brotherhood extended into their respective families. We are honored to make a contribution to Doctors without Borders on his behalf.

My Uncle Rich or Ritchie was a great role model for me as a young family physician. His dedication to his practice was remarkable and he was certainly the model "old town" family doctor. My dad Ken adored Ritchie and had frequent telephone chats as they aged together with grace. My family has many fond memories of vacationing with the Bethune brothers with many blond haired children running wild and free ( and that was just Robbie, Ritchie and Ken). My heartfelt thanks for such an uncle!
