RICHARD BOLTON Obituary
(1939 – 2025) Richard Bolton was born in Montreal, on October 16, 1939, and passed away on October 10th. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Sandi; his children, Andrew (Edel), Sarah, and Philip (Adrienne); his grandchildren, Thomas, Lucas, Leona, Clara, and Ozzie; and Millie, the sixth in a long line of Labrador Retrievers. After Lower Canada College, Richard went to McGill and later to the Université de Montréal, where he completed a doctorate in plasma physics. Richard met Sandi and they wed in 1964. Together, Richard and Sandi moved to England for a position at the Atomic Energy Research lab in Oxfordshire. Their first child, Andrew, was born in 1971 in England. In 1973, the family returned to the Montreal, where Sarah was born, followed by Philip three years later. Back in Montreal, he continued his work in energy research at Hydro-Quebec and eventually became responsible for Canada's project into nuclear fusion. Shortly after, Richard and Sandi began what would become a life project; the building of their home in Valdurn, which was completed in 1978. The family went "up north" every weekend and all summer and this is where they made many of their lifelong friends. In his last days, Richard often talked about Valdurn - the cross-country skiing, sailing, biking, swimming, and the occasional bender. He was very involved in the Valdurn Proprietor's Association as well as the Montreal Indoor Tennis Club, another institution that was very important to him (and Sandi). At the "Indoor," he played tennis until this past April. Richard did not take up much space in the room. He was quiet, kind, and deeply thoughtful. He was a brilliant man and often received phone calls to resolve dinner table disputes from neighbours and friends. He loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and the Labradors that were always close by. He adored watching his grandchildren playing their sports and always had the camera around his neck. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Montreal General Hospital Foundation.
