Richard BRADEEN Obituary

RICHARD CHARLES BRADEEN May 18, 1956 - December 27, 2022 It is with profound sadness that Clan Bradeen announces Richard's passing on December 27, 2022, in his 67th year. The eldest son of Danny Draper (d. 2006) and Jim Bradeen (d. 2010), Richard shed his mortal coil surrounded by loved ones, having lost his battle with kidney cancer. Left to mourn are his beloved spouse, Barbara Osler; his adored children, Matthew (Melissa), James (Keisha) and Emily; as well as his cherished granddaughter, Vivienne. Also mourning are his siblings, Rob, Kate (Tim), Sara (Danny) and Derek (Catherine); his cousin, Susan Luke Hill; and his many beloved nieces and nephews. "Butch" was a proud Montrealer and would gladly contend for the title of #1 fan of the Montreal Canadiens. At Lower Canada College, he distinguished himself as a scholar-athlete. In addition to representing LCC on the CBC's academic quiz competition, "Reach for the Top," he played on two of their Montreal championship football teams. Though he was scouted by the Alouettes, Richard instead turned to Queen's University in Kingston, securing a scholarship in the Faculty of Commerce. Following Queen's, Rich continued down the 401 to Toronto, commencing his career at Clarkson Gordon (later Ernst & Young) and obtaining his CA. At E&Y, Richard rose to president of Corporate Finance as well as partner and helped guide the firm as a member of the Partnership Board of Directors. In 1997, he returned to Montreal to launch a second career in planes, trains and snowmobiles at Bombardier Inc., during the firm's ambitious global expansion. Rich steadily rose to become senior vice president of Strategy, Mergers & Acquisitions, Pension Investments, Corporate Audit Services and Risk Assessment. His last stop was as a consultant at Moment Factory, a multimedia entertainment studio, assisting in their global growth. He also served as a director on the boards of Goodwill Industries, Superior Plus and Stantec. In every setting, he stood out for his tireless work ethic, intelligence, integrity and business acumen. Wise, quick and sensitive, Richard was a gentleman and a gentle man with a wicked sense of humour, an eclectic taste in music, an ardent passion for all things culinary (most especially cheese...and wine), and an insatiable hunger for knowledge. He read widely and deeply and was consulted on many diverse subjects by his colleagues, friends and family. His enthusiasm for his home province was matched by astute geopolitical insight; he was a citizen of Quebec and of the world. A devoted father who adored and appreciated the individual strengths of his three children, he especially enjoyed delving into conversation with members of the next generation. Raised in a time and culture in which roles for men and women tended to the rigidly traditional, Rich always strove to create opportunities for women to rise. He fully believed it was the knowledge and talent of the individual that mattered most, and given the right opportunity, each person would live up to their capabilities. When Rich was not working -- a rare occurrence -- he loved spending time with Barb and the kids in Metis-sur-Mer on the Lower St. Lawrence, where he had summered since childhood. Finally settling in a place of his own in Metis, he enjoyed entertaining family and friends, walking the beach whilst looking for 'pirate treasure' and reading on the verandah, cherishing the view. He golfed at the Cascade Golf & Tennis Club in Metis and was also a member at Mount Bruno Country Club in Montreal. One of Richard's greatest passions was casting a wet fly for the elusive salmon, relishing the tranquility found on the pristine rivers of eastern Quebec and New Brunswick. For many summers, following family tradition, he would make an annual pilgrimage to the Saint Anne River. These were his most favorite fishing trips, with his family and close friends gathered at that river in the Chic-Chocs, Rich's version of heaven. The immediate family would like to thank all the incredibly supportive friends, extended family and professionals who assisted on Richard's final journey. You have been our rocks and we could not have ridden this rollercoaster ride without you. The family will receive condolences at 10:00 a.m. with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Forêt, Outremont, QC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Atlantic Salmon Federation (https://www.asf.ca/forms/donation).

Richard and I were classmates in high school, and bumped into each other once or twice in later years. I remember him as a quietly decent guy, and I'm saddened to hear of his death. It seems his was a life well-lived. To his family I offer my condolences, and a wish that Richard will live on for you in happy memories. -- Lee Webber

I was deeply saddened to learn of Richard´s recent passing.

I had the privilege of being a classmate, team-mate, and friend of Rich´s when I attended Lower Canada College from grade 7 through grade 12.

I remember Richard for his quiet and deep intelligence, his prowess and grit as an athlete and his friendship. We all knew that there were ways to crack his natural reserve and on the occasions we managed to do so, we were rewarded with his very wide smile and room-shaking belly laugh.

Whenever the famous Canada-Russia Summit Series of 1972 is mentioned, I immediately think of Rich because, as the magic of Game 8 unfolded, a bunch of us watched and cheered in front of the TV at his house. My nostalgic answer to the uniquely Canadian "Where were you when Paul Henderson scored the winning goal?" question is "Rich Bradeen´s basement".

Rich played goalie on the school hockey teams but the sport where he truly left his mark was football. He was a warrior. I have a very clear mental image of Rich (actually his gridiron alter-ego "Butcher Bradshaw") on the football field: he is plastered with mud and sweat; there are multiple pieces of torn padding and gear dangling from him like Christmas tree ornaments and he is grinning from ear to ear, the happy gladiator.

He was a true original and he will be missed. I offer my deepest condolences to his family and many friends.
