RICHARD BRYANT Memoriam
(1941 - 2024) In loving memory of Richard "Rick" Bryant, who passed away on January 11, 2024, in Parksville, British Columbia. He is deeply missed - none more so than by his wife of 48 years, Nancy; his daughter, Sarah; his son-in-law, Jeremy; and his granddaughter, Charlotte. Born on February 16, 1941, in Edmonton, Rick was the son of Anne (née Finley) and Edward Bryant. He was brother to Edward and his wife, Heather (both predeceased), Sandra (Stanley), Beverley (Loretta), and Lincoln. Rick attended Royal Roads and Royal Military College, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering, and later earned an MBA from McMaster University. His lifelong friendships were evident in his participation in class reunions over the years. Rick had a keen intellect that kept him always learning and was known for having an answer - and the ability to fix or build just about anything. Rick spent more than 35 years in public service with the federal government, making lasting contributions to the Canadian Hydrographic Service and the Canadian Coast Guard, ultimately serving as Regional Director for the Western Region. Following his retirement from public service, Rick continued his leadership in the maritime sector as the president of the Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia. Rick met Nancy in 1968, and it was love at first sight. They married in 1976 and made their home in Ontario for many years, where they created lasting memories - sailing on Lake Ontario, skiing and gathering with family in Horseshoe Valley. A career opportunity brought them to Vancouver in 1982, a move Rick embraced wholeheartedly. He delighted in the West Coast lifestyle, from ski slopes to family camping trips, annual horseback-riding adventures, and regular visits to Tofino. In retirement, Rick and Nancy began a new chapter in French Creek on Vancouver Island. Their home near the beach became a hub for family and neighbourhood gatherings. Rick's retirement years were full as he tended his garden, enjoyed rounds of golf, and spent time with family, particularly with his cherished granddaughter, Charlotte. Rick approached life with genuine curiosity and an enduring enthusiasm for new experiences. Whether sailing, golfing, gardening, gourmet cooking, or gracefully carving through fresh powder on the ski slopes, he pursued his interests with joy. An avid traveller, Rick explored Canada and the world, delighting in different cultures and cuisines and often planning trips around food and wine. A celebration of Rick's life was held on February 11, 2024, with family and friends gathered to honour his memory. Rick is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children, Sarah (Jeremy), James and Christine (deceased); and his grandchildren, Charlotte and Sebastian. He will always be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Rick's family remains deeply grateful to the staff of Trillium Hospice in Parksville, the Palliative Care Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and to Dr. Dalla Lana for their compassionate care and support.
