RICHARD FRISE Obituary

(June 9, 1937 - December 10, 2025) It is with deep sadness that the family of Richard Alan (Dick) Frise announce his death after an illness which lasted several months. Dick confronted his illness with grace, courage and a unique sense of humour. He leaves his much-loved family, Judith his wife of 63 years, his daughter Sarah, son Peter, daughter-in-law Mardi and four grandchildren, Ethan and Devin Main, Austin and Chelsea Frise. He also leaves dear and valued friends. Dick was born and raised in Peterborough and lived his adult life in Richmond Hill and Toronto. He received an Honours Degree in History from the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Arts from the University of Toronto and a Master of Education from the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education. He spent his professional life in education at the secondary school level, a career he loved, first at the North York Board of Education and finishing at the Peel Board of Education. From birth to the last summer of his life, he spent time at the family enclave on Clear Lake in the Kawarthas on property his father bought when he returned from the Great War. The cottage, his own family and extended family members, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and assorted friends were a huge part of his life and his love. I think it is agreed that he passed this love of spending time at the lake with family and friends on to at least two more generations. Dick was a lifelong curler from schoolboy curling in high school to finishing the season with the Octogenarians this past February. In retirement he enjoyed golf, particularly Thursdays with his pals and their trips south to play in the off season. Dick was an avid hiker and together with Judith, they made it to five continents combining their love of travel and of hiking. They also had several decades of great hiking with their friends along with a little wine-tasting. His other passions included jazz, single malt scotch, newspapers and his beloved Blue Jays. His greatest love was his family. He was no bystander in the lives of his children and grandchildren, staying interested and connected. In his own words Dick lived a long, happy and rewarding life. He maintained that positiveness up until just a few days before he died. To quote a good friend "he lived with such enthusiasm". With his love, his quiet support, his overreaching kindness and his live and let live attitude he will be terribly missed. There will be a gathering to share memories of Richard on January 31st from 1.00 to 3.00 p.m. at Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville), Toronto. All are welcome. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

I was lucky to have had Dick as my Principal decades ago. He was an inspired educator who found the right balance between challenge and support that made me want to grow as a teacher. He had an easy laugh and always had time to listen. Dick was an ideas person who encouraged creativity and risk-taking in his staff. He held high standards for himself and those who worked with him, and his outstretched hand was always there to help bring you along.

I hope this coming Saturday brings you much support and is a warming tribute to Dick and his life. Heather, Crispin, Emma and Rachel

My wife and I have fond memories of Richard and his wife Judith. I met them through my involvement with the Board of Later Life Learning. We think of them often as we drive along Broadway and have pleasant memories of a visit a few years ago at their home. Richard was a kind and decent man.

I played with Richard for several enjoyable years and will miss him as he was a pleasure to curl with and as reading about him, he was a pleasure to all. Truly a remarkable individual.

Richard and I shared our volunteer interest at LLL where we participated in a lively discussion group as well as serving on the Board of Directors. He was a calm voice of reason and brought an intelligent voice to every get together. His kindness and presence will be missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing Richard as committee colleague and Board member in our seniors learning organization.
We similarly volunteered in a curling association where we shared a love for the camaraderie and the competition of the game.
Richard was a true gentleman. Quiet, considerate, contemplative and a wise voice of reason always. He balanced his serious approach with a dry clever wit. He was a steady role model.
Thoughtful sympathies go to Judith and Family.

Richard was a gentleman and a very good friend. We curled together often and also played some golf. We also served on curling committees together. He always offered sage advice and was very considerate of others. He will be missed by all who knew him.
