RICHARD GRAND Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard Arthur Grand on September 26, 2024. Born in Toronto to James and Helen Grand, Richard was the fourth of six siblings -James (deceased), John, Robert, Rosemary, and Martin Kent. He spent his summers in Muskoka, where he easily navigated the lakes and enjoyed countless adventures with his siblings and his own family. Muskoka always held a special place in his heart. In the 1970's, Richard moved to Ottawa for a position with his family's business, Grand & Toy, where he would remain for the rest of his life. In 1987, he married the love of his life, Karen, and through her, became deeply connected with the Boyd family, forging close bonds that lasted his lifetime. A talented and prolific drummer, Richard played in numerous bands, most notably the Mynah Birds, whose gigs took him across North America. Richard found music medicinal, and appreciated all genres (even hip hop). His sense of rhythm made him a coveted dance partner. Yet, despite all his musical accomplishments, family was his true pride and joy. When not with his family, you could find him on the golf course. He was the beloved father of Aaron, Sarah (Chris Vivone), Alexandra (James Blake), and Stephanie (Michael Domingo); and the cherished "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Michael, Ella, Jack, Penny, and Owen, who loved him dearly in return. Richard's happiest moments were spent surrounded by family, especially when preparing his famous Sunday dinners, where his culinary skills shone brightly. Known for his humour, charm and charisma, Richard brought laughter to everyone he encountered. His wit and warmth stayed with him until the end, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tara Jennings for her exceptional care. Richard will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.

I first met Richard in 1998 at Elmwood School after being coaxed into a volunteer job on a fundraising committee. From the start, Richard was overwhelmingly charming and helpful...in addition to being so very much supportive and in love with his amazing wife Karen. Over the years, we spent time playing euchre, eating delicious meals prepared by the amazing Rita and laughing our faces off. He was a great storyteller, advice-giver, friend and supporter. What resonates most with me was his sage "laissez faire" attitude towards anything that wasn´t positive or family-oriented. I loved how much he loved Karen and his children...always going out of his way to make sure they knew how much they were loved.
He had the best style...the nicest curated scent and one of the best voices I have ever heard.
He left hilarious messages on our old school answering machines and gave the best hugs I could have asked for.
I´m late writing this message but only because it´s taken this long to fathom that he´s no longer in this world...at the ready to remind us all what is truly most important in life.

I met Richard in the early 1990s when he came into my store and shop to help Sarah with a winter wheel and tire package for her Honda Prelude. They liked my suggestions and we went on to become close friends, spent many hours smoking cigars in his amazing kitchen and in his garage discussing many fun topics. His kindness and sense of humour really stood out consistently over the years both in business and privately. His daughters were were very special to him as was Karen. Watching them grow up was a real treat. Thanks for all the great memories Ritchie. Love and condolences to Karen, Aaron, Sarah, Alex, Stephanie and his siblings. See you on the other side fear friend.

Precious Rich, you taught me to love Blue Cheese and understand your eldest brother JR Grand Jr. Poppy/Poppa was the name you both chose for your grandchildren to use out of respect for Percy and percussion was a vehicle shared with your 'Kent' siblings - David with the TSO with those huge Kettle Drums.. I chose to be called Nana when Tory arrived in all her glory. Love you, miss you youngest Brother in Law. Thank you for being so honest. Patti Grand

Very sad to hear of Richard´s passing. A very close friend and in many respects mentor over many years, with wonderful memories especially involving Muskoka and Maine with our respective families. So sorry that life got in the way the last few years and we fell out of touch. Heartfelt condolences to Karen and the family.
