Richard GRANGE Obituary

RICHARD A. GRANGE 1944 - 2018 Richard Allan Grange passed away on Wednesday, October 10 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria after a three-month battle with cancer. Since being diagnosed on July 27, his wife Jody and his entire family, Brian (Jessie), Lindsay, Kimberly (Nathan), Ian, and grandchildren Ethan and Abigayle have been by his side. Rick left an indelible impression on those around him, touching the lives of many in Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and his home of the past 20 years, Masset, Haida Gwaii. Rick lived his life unapologetically, with determination and grit, and by setting-and achieving-goals that others often thought unreachable. Those who knew him also knew how quietly generous he was and how he lived to provide for his family and those around him. Always thinking, planning and building, Rick established his first company in 1970, a contract trucking company named Cart-Rite Cartage Limited. In 1972, he and business partner Brian Legge founded Intercon Security Limited, which operated in both Canada and the United States and grew to be the largest Canadian owned security company at the time. Together, he and Brian went on to build The West Coast Fishing Club, with lodges situated on remote Langara Island and Port Louis and which recently celebrated its 30th year. There, in Haida Gwaii, Rick found his ultimate home. From the beginning he was passionate about supporting the community and hiring locally. His determination to set higher standards of service in the sport-fishing industry resulted in Masset becoming a transportation hub for all lodge operators and made a lasting impact on the regional economy. He also focused his efforts on ensuring the sustainability of resources and developing large-scale salmon enhancement programs through the Friends of the Yakoun River Society and Friends of the Marble River Society. Rick built a home and hobby farm in Masset on Tow Hill Road, of which he was extremely proud. Some of his fondest memories involved sharing his dinner table with friends or sitting for hours by the trout pond with Jody, with other family and friends, or on his own. The family wishes to thank the team of doctors, nurses and health care aides of the eigth floor of the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Patient Care Centre, led by Dr Saltman and Dr Earle, and the BC Cancer Agency. Rick was appreciative of the care he received, as are we. We would also like to thank the friends and loved ones who travelled to visit him in hospital. Rick was always at his best surrounded by those he cared about, and he lived out his last days no differently. A celebration of Rick's life will be held on November 17, 2018 at the Pacific Gateway Hotel in Richmond, BC from 4:00 - 7:30 p.m. Please contact (604) 233-9232 for more information. A second celebration of life will be held in Haida Gwaii in the spring.
