Richard HOGARTH Obituary

RICHARD McCRAE HOGARTH December 21, 1930 - April 18, 2021 Richard Hogarth was a larger-than-life presence. He left us after a tough battle with Covid. Richard extended vast love, warmth, wisdom and generosity to the people around him. Family always came first. Son of Madge and Major-General Donald M. Hogarth, he leaves behind his beloved Martha (married 62 years), and children John (Susan), Donald (Terri) and Jane. He took enormous pride in his grandchildren Lauren, Richard, Jack, Marshall, Evan, Georgia, Renée and Henry. Richard lived a long, fulfilling life that left nothing on the table. Even at age 90, after battling back from Guillain-Barré, he was in excellent health. Nothing kept him from his daily walks. Richard loved Canada, especially the Far North. This was reflected in his passion for Canadian art. He attended TCS and McGill, where he studied engineering and made many close, lifelong friends. Richard began his career in mine exploration, in Northern Quebec, and mining was forever fixed in his blood. He ultimately settled in Toronto, where he gained success as a stockbroker and served on 34 corporate boards. He chaired one of them, Talmora, to the present. His work was always informed by deep research; many sought him out for his insights. Richard generously shared his financial success with numerous charities and institutions, among them Pathways to Education, ROM, AGO, National Ballet of Canada and Ballet Jorgen. His greatest commitment was to Michael Garron Hospital, where he served in multiple roles for more than 50 years. Richard was endlessly active. He loved tennis and skiing, pursuing both into his 80's. He hated golf. He built deep friendships at Georgian Peaks, Queen's Club, Lake of Bays Tennis Club and York Club. For seven decades, he ventured twice annually to Maganassippi Fish and Game Club, where he delighted in the wilderness and camaraderie. At his beloved Braeheid on Lake of Bays, he never stopped sawing, scraping, painting and repairing, and took great pleasure in it. There, his greatest joy was holding court at the dinner table, where he shared food, wine, lively conversation and, often, a Robert Service poem. His stories were fed by a lifetime of world travels and adventure, prodigious reading and a sharp wit that stayed with him to the end. In many respects Richard got better with age. Though his sight and mobility faltered, he became ever more kind, loving and generous, especially to his beloved Martha. Grumpy, the nickname he earned from his grandchildren in their youth, became a term of endearment. Those qualities were abundantly reflected in Richard's close bonds with his and Martha's longtime caregivers Lana, Reynaly and Jennifer. His family is grateful for their kindness and support. A huge thanks also to Michael Garron staff for their compassionate care. The enormity of Richard's presence leaves a big hole in many lives. But that presence, and the love that flowed from it, will sustain us. Donations in his memory can be made to Michael Garron Hospital Foundation and Pathways to Education. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 26 at 2 p.m. For service information, please go to www.etouch.ca.

To the Hogarth Family,

My parents were so proud and blessed to have your dad as a life-long friend. Your dad enriched their lives and it’s obvious he passed those qualities and values along to his kids and grandchildren. I got to know Richard and the Hogarth family more at Monday’s service and I felt enriched too. My condolences to Martha and the Hogarth family.

My sincere condolences to Martha, John, Donald, Jane and all the family.
Dick was a man with so many qualities: kind; intelligent; thoughtful; strong; funny; self deprecating; supremely capable; and family loving. As John said, he was of a generation that had grit - among them his “family” friends from McGill including Miles Outerbridge, John Evans, John Brinckman, Ian Mackintosh and our father John Oliphant. He was a wonderful conversationalist who might raise a brow and say: “It’s funny that you say that” and then go on to recount an amusing anecdote or incident, often at his own expense. He was a one-off.
Our respectful thoughts again to all the family.

There are some people you wish could live forever, not merely rely on your memory of them or their legacies. Richard Hogarth was such a man. Everyone (I knew) who knew him will remember him in their own special way...easily extracting excerpts and snippets...meaningful personal experiences with him...

Richard stands out for me as the noblest and most respect-worthy of men. He possessed and exuded an abundance of warmth, generosity, openness, and genuine affection to all with whom he came into contact. He was an expert at making you feel special, and every interaction with him was impactful in a manner that endeared him to you all the more, occasion after occasion. I think the example of him being the best he could be rubbed off on a lot of folks; certainly me. I'll be forever grateful for knowing him and for our too-brief, thirteen year friendship at Lake of Bays.

This is sad news and very disappointing. As I regularly walk past Brae Heid, I look forward to summer and finding Richard on one of his walks, meeting his broad welcoming smile and twinkling eyes. I know he had many more stories to share with me and now I will miss out. My sincere condolences to all who knew him.

Dick has been one of the finest gentlemen that I have had the pleasure of knowing. My thoughts are with Martha, John, Don, Jane and their families as we experience the deep sadness of our loss. I will miss him, but at the same time, never forget the amazing times we spent together around the lake, on the tennis court, skiing in Beaver Creek, or just enjoying the endless stories that Dick relate. His intellect, wit and true friendship will live on in my heart.

I will always have fond memories of Mr. Hogarth. I have taken care of his property for over 35 years. I will remember his great love for his gardens and will think of him often when I see his tulips bloom. He was one of my favourite customers and I enjoyed listening to his stories of fishing, the cottage and his family. It was a pleasure to work for him and he will be truly missed.
Our condolences to your family.

I was blessed to have had opportunity to work with Richard at Michael Garron Hospital for many years as he dedicated his time and experience to the Hospital and Foundation Boards. He was kind, generous, a great friend and mentor.

With deep sympathy to Martha and Family in your loss. Richard was a true
Renaissance man, with many varied interests, well read, a sharp wit and a kind word to all. Also, remembering a lovely dinner at “The Round Table” at Lake of Bays that Terry and I attended with several close mining friends; happy memories. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry for your loss and extend my deepest condolences. I came to know Uncle Richard better in the last 20 or so years, as he was a great supporter of the Parkinson's SuperWalk, re: his cousin Chris, my dad. We had lovely chats over the years, sharing photos and anecdotes of the family from long ago. He always had a strong and positive outlook. I will miss him dearly.

Many members of The York Club were privileged to meet the Hogarths on any number of club occasions. Those of us who served on the Art Committee of the club were more fortunate for we had the opportunity to witness Richard Hogarth's profound love of Canadian Art and his awareness of the heightened grace that all things of beauty could bestow upon a life.

Richard was always both modest and generous with his insights. I will miss this modesty, generosity and unfailing good humour -and daresay that many others will feel the same.
